Scattered clouds, warm, partly sunny (clouds evening) and dry (briefly wet early evening) update for West Rockville Maryland for Sunday June 24, 2018
Sunday started out somewhat cloudy, but not foggy like yesterday, though still muggy. We had a muggy, warmer PM with late afternoon storm cloud buildups that finally led to a light shower between 1945-2000 (0.01″) but I heard no thunder. Really interesting, menacing-looking clouds raced through in the early evening despite the light rainfall (see today’s featured image – looking east from my bedroom window). I was on the western edge of a strong line that extended ENE from my location well into SE PA. Temperatures held in the 60s in the early AM but rose into the mid 80s by early in the afternoon, slowly cooling thereafter with the increase in cloud cover towards evening. Overnight into Monday skies cleared and cooled into the upper-mid 60s just after sunrise. Temperatures will warm up into the low 80s with partly cloudy skies on Monday afternoon, with no chance of rain. The Sunday maximum temperature was 85.9° @ 1255, while the Sunday minimum temperature was 67.3° @ 0615. The dew point temperatures remained in the mid 60s-mid 70s all day, ranging from a low of 66° @ 0527 up to a high of 74° @ 1534. The barometric pressure rose a bit over Saturday’s values – the lowest value being 29.83″ @ 1746 up to a high of 29.93″ @ 2350. The relative humidity lowered a bit from yesterday’s, ranging from a high of 97% at 0711 down to a low of 58% at 1305.
Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444 I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDrockv200#history/ I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/ Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge. I actually use the data I post to cocorahs from my 4″ cocorahs gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day.
Sunday was partly cloudy, warmer and more humid with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the upper-mid 60s with the light early evening shower barely wetting the sidewalks and roadways. Partly sunny on Monday with a bit of cirrostratus and cirrocumulus in the early AM, then puffy fair-weather cumulus in the afternoon with highs in the low 80s and lows around 60°. Tuesday should be partly cloudy with highs around 80° and lows in the mid 60s. Wednesday should be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 70s and lows around 70° with a 50 POP for PM thunderstorms. Thursday should be partly cloudy once again with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the mid-upper 60s with once again only a 20 POP for a shower or storm. Sunny on Friday with highs in the upper 80s and lows in the upper 60s to finish out the work-week.
At 1444, NBC4 radar is showing only a few scattered showers in SW VA within the 4-state mid-Atlantic region that should stay south of our area today. Closest other action is up in the KY/TN/southern OH area with numerous showers that won’t make it here anytime soon, if at all.
At 1444, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WX Bug station are as follows:
Partly Cloudy (fluffy fair-weather scattered cumulus plus some higher cirroform clouds observed in some spots in between the cumulus), warming up slowly and staying somewhat drier than yesterday
Station Relative Location Temp RH DP BP Wind High/Low temp on Sunday
VP2 Ground 80.3° 61% 66° 30.09″F NA 85.9°/67.3°
The total precipitation in the cocorahs gauge was 0.01″ through midnight Sunday from the light evening shower. The VP2 tipping bucket also had 0.01″. I think the generally greater amount in the VP2 tipping bucket rain gauge recently has been at least partially due to its proximity to a dense evergreen tree that frequently drips down and then blows the “catch” into the gauge. I mostly use this gauge to tell me when and how hard it rained.
Friday’s precipitation was 0.01″
June precipitation 3.76″
Year-to-date precipitation total 22.18″
WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 80° 55% 63° 30.11″S N 2 G NW 9
140° from station 87°/66°
The Lakewood rain gauge recorded 0.10″ of rain on Sunday. June total precip is now being reported as 7.90″ with the 2018 year-to-date (YTD) amount now at 33.93″. I definitely continue to believe that at times the great disparity between the Lakewood WX Bug station precipitation amount total for the month and year and my cocorahs gauge based data is that the Lakewood precip values are estimated/adjusted from radar.
At 2400 obs Sunday night the temperature from the VP2 was 70.1° RH 94% BP 29.92″S DP 68.3°
Partly Cloudy, mild, muggy at 2400 Sunday
Good afternoon from the partly cloudy, moderately warm and somewhat drier home of the Walrus on Monday.
