AM fog, low clouds, light rain showers, PM partly cloudy, mild, drier update for West Rockville Maryland for Saturday June 23, 2018

Saturday started out in the very early AM with clouds and light showers (0.08″ daily total, most fell between 0055-0210), then around sunrise very damp with light-moderate fog and mild, evolving into a partly cloudy, milder PM and drier despite threatening skies at times and flooding rains elsewhere in the region. Temperatures held in the 60s in the AM but rose into the upper 70s by late afternoon. Overnight into Sunday skies stayed partly cloudy, damp but without any observable fog only dropping down into the upper-mid 60s by sunrise. Temperatures should warm up into the upper 80s with partly cloudy skies, but with a 40 POP for PM thunderstorms. The Saturday maximum temperature was 78.1° @ 1721, while the Saturday minimum temperature was 64.1° @ 0152. The dew point temperatures remained in the low 60s-low 70s all day, ranging from a low of 62° @ 0000 up to a high of 72° @ 1348. The barometric pressure were a tad lower than Friday’s values – the highest value being 29.88″ @ 0000 down to a low of 29.78″ @ 1839. The relative humidity values rose some (on the high end) from yesterday’s, ranging from a high of 97% at 0422 down to a low of 77% at 1712.

Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444 I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDrockv200#history/ I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/ Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge. I actually use the data I post to cocorahs from my 4″ cocorahs gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day.

Saturday featured early fog, low clouds and light showers yielding to partly cloudy, milder conditions in the PM. Sunday should be partly cloudy, humid and warmer with highs in the upper 80s and lows in the mid 60s with now a 40 POP for PM thunderstorms. Partly sunny on Monday with highs in the low 80s and lows around 60°. Tuesday should be partly cloudy with highs around 80° and lows in the mid 60s. Wednesday should be partly cloudy with highs in the low 80s and lows around 70° with only a 20 POP for an isolated thunderstorm. Thursday should be partly cloudy once again with highs in the upper-mid 80s and lows around 70° with once again only a 20 POP for a shower or storm.

At 1052, NBC4 radar is showing only a few scattered showers out in central WV within the 4-state mid-Atlantic region that might develop into storms for our area later, but maybe not. These summertime showers come and go often during the day. Closest other action is up in the Buffalo NY/Toronto ON/west towards Detroit MI where numerous showers and storms are falling.

At 1052, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WX Bug station are as follows:

Partly Cloudy (partially broken altostratus and altocumulus) , warming up and increasingly humid

Station Relative Location Temp  RH   DP     BP     Wind High/Low temp on Saturday
VP2              Ground          80.2° 75% 72° 29.88″S NA      78.1°/64.1°

The total precipitation in the cocorahs gauge was 0.08″ through midnight Saturday from mostly early AM showers. The VP2 tipping bucket also had 0.08″. I think the generally greater amount in the VP2 tipping bucket rain gauge recently has been at least partially due to its proximity to a dense evergreen tree that frequently drips down and then blows the “catch” into the gauge. I mostly use this gauge to tell me when and how hard it rained.

Friday’s precipitation was 0.08″
June precipitation 3.75″
Year-to-date precipitation total 22.17″

WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 81° 62% 66° 29.91″R SW 3 G SW 9
                              140° from station                         81°/63°
The Lakewood rain gauge recorded 0.10″ of rain on Saturday. June total precip is now being reported as 7.78″ with the 2018 year-to-date (YTD) amount now at 33.81″. I definitely continue to believe that at times the great disparity between the Lakewood WX Bug station precipitation amount total for the month and year and my cocorahs gauge based data is that the Lakewood precip values are estimated/adjusted from radar.

At 2400 obs Friday night the temperature from the VP2 was 71.1° RH 92% BP 29.84″R DP 68.7°
Partly Cloudy, milder, muggy at 2400 Saturday

Good morning from the cloudy, warm, muggy home of the Walrus on Sunday.
