AUGUST 12-21, 2020 – SUMMER HEAT LESSENS MORE AS TROPICAL MOISTURE HOLDS STRONG WITH FREQUENT HEAVY RAINS FIRST HALF AND LIGHTER RAINS LAST HALF OF THE PERIOD UPDATE FOR WEST ROCKVILLE MARYLAND

AUGUST 12-21, 2020 – SUMMER HEAT LESSENS MORE AS TROPICAL MOISTURE HOLDS STRONG WITH FREQUENT HEAVY RAINS FIRST HALF AND LIGHTER RAINS LAST HALF OF THE PERIOD UPDATE FOR WEST ROCKVILLE MARYLAND

This mid-month period’s rains (5.06″ total) generally were from the left over moisture from  Isaias’ visit back on August 4. There were 3 thunderstorm days with 1 Sunny/Clear day, 4 Partly Cloudy and 5 Cloudy days.

We now have 7.72 inches of rain so far in August and 36.83 inches for the year through August 21. The minimum temperature for this period was 62.6° on the 17th. During this latest 10 day period the highest temperature reached was 89.9° on the 12th. Only 1 day had (rounded) max temps of 90 or greater while min temps below 70 were more comfortably recorded on 7 days with the remainder in the 70s during the period.

7 of the 10 days in the period received measurable rain, highlighted by frequent heavy thunderstorm amounts from the 12th to the 16th (total for this mini-period 4.81″. Frequent flood watches and warnings were posted on several days during this period.  

The heat moderated during the period with only 1 day reaching the 90 max threshold (rounded up to the nearest degree), with two modest min temp streaks ending (70 or greater from 8/6 – 8/14) and starting (less than 70 from 8/15 through 8/21). 

The current temperature is 72.3 degrees at 0557 on August 22 with cloudy, occassionally light showery conditions. The max temperature looks to rise into the upper 80s to 90s during the coming week, with chances for showers or thundershowers over this weekend.
