AUGUST 1-11, 2020 – SUMMER HEAT LESSENS SOMEWHAT AS TROPICAL STORM ISAIAS DOMINATES THE MID PERIOD WITH SPOTTY FLOODING RAINS, HIGH WINDS UPDATE FOR WEST ROCKVILLE MARYLAND

The heat and high dew points from July have partially left us as extreme heat has not resurfaced so far in August. However dew point temps remain high, peaking well into the 70s at the beginning and end of this period. Oddly enough the dew point values were a bit lower during Isaias’ visit, helped by the lower temperatures that were occurring. Much more rain fell well to my south and east, along with higher winds, resulting in floods, downed trees, power outages, and related storm actions in those areas.

Monthly rains (2.62″ total) were mostly due to Isaias’ activity on August 4. There were no real thunderstorm days with 2 Sunny/Clear days, 5 Partly Cloudy and 4 Cloudy days.

We now have 2.62 inches of rain so far in August and 31.73 inches for the year through August 11 (preliminary figures). The minimum temperature for this period was 67.5° on the 5th. During this latest 11 day period the highest temperature reached was 90.8° on the 10th. Only 3 days had max temps of 90 or greater while min temps below 70 were recorded on 2 days with the remainder in the 70s during the period.

Daily precip, max/min temperature values, general sky condition, and Peak Wind Gust (PWG) for each day of the period include:

8/1  0.01 85.0 70.8 P Cloudy, warm, humid, light shower – 14 SE

8/2  0.00 90.2 77.2 P Cloudy, hotter, humid, dry – 25 SW

8/3  0.39 85.5 71.2 M Cloudy, cooler, a bit less humid , evening rain – 28 S

8/4  1.91 83.7 68.2 Cloudy, cooler, humid, tropical storm Isaias heavy rains, winds – 29 NW

8/5  0.00 84.2 67.5 Sunny, moderately warm and humid, drying out – 18 NW

8/6  0.31 83.7 71.2 M Cloudy, moderately warm, a bit more humid, showers – 25 W

8/7  0.00 86.3 70.4 P Cloudy, warm, humid, drying out – 22 E

8/8  0.00 79.7 70.8 Cloudy, cooler, still moderately humid but dry – 12 NE

8/9  0.00 87.9 70.4 P Cloudy, warmer, a bit more humid, dry – 16 NW

8/10 0.00 90.8 72.7 Sunny, hot, humid, dry – 16 SW

8/11 0.00 90.1 74.0 P Cloudy, early AM fog, hot, humid PM – 19 SW

4 of the 11 days in the period received measurable rain, highlighted by the tropical downpours from Isaias on August 4. The heat moderated during the period with only 3 days reaching the 90 max threshold, and two days around the time of Isaias had min temps in the 60s.

The current temperature is 77.7 degrees at 0324 on August 12 with fair, dry, muggy conditions. The max temperature looks to lower into the upper 70s-low 80s during the coming week, with daily chances for showers or thundershowers. A flood watch is currently in affect and will probably be the norm on many of the coming days.
