Cloudy, cool, very wet update for West Rockville Maryland for Tuesday, August 21, 2018

On Tuesday we were relatively cool and cloudy, but also very wet. Rain started about 1030 and continued off and on the rest of the day, particularly in the late evening. My grand total for the day of 3.92″ is the second highest amount in my short period of record, only surpassed by the 4.02″ that fell exactly one month earlier on July 21, 2018. The heaviest rainfall (2.89″ recorded in the VP2 gauge) fell between 2245 and 2400 (extending for a few minutes into Wednesday). The day’s max rain rate was 5.19″/hour at 2335. Minor flooding here (we are usually high and dry- well drained area) with numerous storm cells training on through. The cool NE flow retreated with the passage of a warm front to our S and SW that brought us into really moisture-laden air, and with the approaching cold front from the W/NW providing enough lift, heavy rain, well forecasted ahead of time was the result. The Tuesday maximum temperature was 77.4°@ 1654, while the Tuesday minimum temperature was 70.7°@ 2311. The dew point temperatures rose from yesterday’s values, ranging from a low of 69° @ 0027 up to a high of 76° @ 1558. The barometric pressure lowered from Monday’s values – the highest value being 30.10″ @ 0000 down to a low of 29.84″@ 2320. The relative humidity was predictably higher than Monday, ranging from a low of 88% @ 0027 up to a high of 97% at 1510.

Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444 I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDrockv200#history/ I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/ Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge. I actually use the data I post to cocorahs from my 4″ cocorahs gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day.

I kept a pulse on the increasingly rainy conditions as we moved from the afternoon into the evening when the heaviest rain of the day occurred. It was a lot of fun to watch the VP2 display continuously record the heavy rainfall (see today’s featured image of my VP2 display during the heavy rain – but not the heaviest – read elsewhere).

Tuesday was cloudy, relatively cool and very wet with mid-morning rain that continued off and on the rest of the day, particularly in the late evening. Temps held in the 70s all day as did the dew points for most of the day. Wednesday will be partly cloudy with highs in the lower mid 80s and lows around 60° Sun should dominate the rest of the workweek, with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s and lows in the upper 50s to around 60°. The weekend looks partly to mostly sunny and warm, with temps rising into the upper mid 80s by Sunday, lows in the mid-upper 60s.

At 1103, Channel 4 radar is mostly clear in the 4 state region, with just a few widely scattered light showers up in the mountains of PA and WV at this time.

At 1103, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WX Bug station are as follows:

Partly cloudy skies (a somewhat chaotic sky with lower level cumulus and mid-level altostratus that is fairly common in post-frontal scenarios like we are in now), relatively comfortable temps but still humid – but slowly drying out from yesterday’s deluges.

Station Relative Location Temp  RH   DP    BP     Wind High/Low temp on Tuesday
VP2             Ground           75.2° 85% 71° 29.84″R NA     77.4°/70.7°

The total precipitation in the cocorahs gauge was 3.92″ through midnight Tuesday.
The VP2 tipping bucket recorded 4.34″ on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s precipitation was 3.92″
August precipitation total is now 7.39″
Year-to-date precipitation total is now 37.80″

WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 75° 89% 72° 29.86″S Calm G WSW 9
                              140° from station                   Tue. Hi/Lo 77°/70°

The Lakewood rain gauge recorded 2.93″ of rain on Tuesday. The August total precipitation still has a total of 2.38″ with the 2018 year-to-date (YTD) amount holding at 47.55″. I definitely continue to believe that at times the disparities between the Lakewood WX Bug station precipitation amount total for the month and year and my cocorahs gauge based data is that the Lakewood precip values are estimated/adjusted from radar.

At 2400 obs Tuesday night the temperature from the VP2 was 71.0° RH 97% BP 29.85″F DP 70.2°
Cloudy, heavy rain just ending.

Good morning from my mostly cloudy, relatively pleasant but still muggy station. The drying out process has begun at the home of the Walrus on this Tuesday.

  1. Notice on the VP2 display featured image that at 11:24 PM I had 2.24″ of rain so far – with only 36 minutes left in the day – and I wound up with 4.34″ in my VP2 tipping bucket. It was really coming down the hardest of the day right at the end of the day! I have a slight data problem as I could not go out right at midnight due to the thunderstorm still in the area, so I went after the all clear (which fortunately was only 15 or so minutes after midnight) and measured, and used my tipping bucket as a partial guide as to my “precipitation split” for the 2 days.
