Mostly cloudy, cool, damp update for West Rockville Maryland for Monday, August 20, 2018
Once again on Monday we were cool and cloudy, a dense overcast most of the day brought on by a continued moist NE flow off coming down from New England and maritime Canada. Temps held in the 70s all day once again after upper mid 60s lows in the early AM. The high today of 77.1° is now the coolest high temp in August so far, supplanting yesterday’s 79.4° max. There may have been some drizzle during the earlier part of the day but I did not observe any. The Monday maximum temperature was 77.1°@ 1450, while the Monday minimum temperature was 67.2°@ 0706. The dew point temperatures were the same as yesterday’s values, ranging from a low of 65° @ 0542 up to a high of 70° @ 1509. The barometric pressure rose from Sunday’s values – the lowest value being 30.04″ @ 0023 up to a high of 30.13″@ 1108. The relative humidity was a bit higher than Sunday, ranging from a high of 93% @ 0343 down to a low of 77% at 1648.
Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444 I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDrockv200#history/ I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/ Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge. I actually use the data I post to cocorahs from my 4″ cocorahs gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day.
I finished up the basic spreadsheet excel file of my July data, despite a problem with the excel program itself, as my computer said I had an undocumented version of the program and shut it down. I rebooted my computer and for now it is working fine again and I was able to finish up the rest of the month. Now I have to write up summary statistics in a WORD document along with a monthly analysis, which will be fun since the second half of July was so active with large amounts of rain falling.
Monday was cloudy and cool once again with high temps staying in the 70s all day. Overnight into Tuesday remained cloudy and mild, with lows in the upper 60s, and rain on our doorstep this Tuesday morning. Tuesday should see highs in the low 80s and lows around 70° with a much greater chance of showers or thundershowers (80 POP) and remaining cloudy. Severe storms are possible much later, in the late afternoon or evening. After a 40 POP for AM showers on Wednesday with highs in the mid 80s and lows around 60° under partly cloudy skies, sun will dominate the rest of the workweek, with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s and lows in the upper 50s to around 60°.
At 1002, Channel 4 radar is showing rain in north central VA, just across the Potomac River from my part of Maryland, so light rain should be falling here within the next hour or so. Some heavier showers should work in by mid-day.
At 1002, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WX Bug station are as follows:
Mostly cloudy skies (mid-level Stratocumulus overcast continuing), comfortable temps but humid – just started to rain
Station Relative Location Temp RH DP BP Wind High/Low temp on Monday
VP2 Ground 74.6° 91% 72° 30.02″F NA 77.1°/67.2°
The total precipitation in the cocorahs gauge was 0.00″ through midnight Monday.
The VP2 tipping bucket also recorded 0.00″ on Monday.
Monday’s precipitation was 0.00″
August precipitation total 3.47″
Year-to-date precipitation total 33.88″
WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 74° 96% 72° 30.04″F SE 10 G SE 14
140° from station Mon. Hi/Lo 77°/66°
The Lakewood rain gauge recorded 0.00″ of rain on Monday. The August total precipitation still has a total of 2.38″ with the 2018 year-to-date (YTD) amount holding at 47.55″. I definitely continue to believe that at times the disparities between the Lakewood WX Bug station precipitation amount total for the month and year and my cocorahs gauge based data is that the Lakewood precip values are estimated/adjusted from radar.
At 2400 obs Monday night the temperature from the VP2 was 72.9° RH 89% BP 30.10″S DP 69.5°
Cloudy, reasonably comfortable.
Good morning from the cloudy, relatively cool and muggy but dry for the moment home of the Walrus on this Tuesday.
