SEPTEMBER 1-11, 2020 – SUMMER HEAT MODERATES AS OUR FIRST AUTUMN MONTH BEGINS WITH GOOD MOISTURE FROM OUR CONTINUED TROPICAL FLOW IN WEST ROCKVILLE MARYLAND
The heat from July and August continues to reduce as we head into September but with dew points generally remaining high as tropical moisture is still quite
persistently hanging on.
This first third of September period’s rains (2.64 inches total) were from a SW flow of sub-tropical moisture. There were 2 thunderstorm days with 2 Sunny/ Clear days, 6 Partly Cloudy and 3 Cloudy days.
The minimum temperature for this period was 59.0° on the 6th, our first spell into the 50s since mid-June. During this latest 11 day period the highest temperature reached was 87.5 degrees on the 3rd. 4 days had mins in the muggy 70s, with 5 days in the 60s and 2 in the 50s

5 of the 11 days in the period received measurable rain, with a few intense rainy periods accompanied by some localized flooding. Two of the 5 days had
thunderstorms, quite strong with brief gusty winds and tropical downpours. The total for this eleven day period was 2.64 inches. The highlight rain event
was the intense mid-day rains on the 10th with the region suffering under debiiitating floods blocking up roads resulting in numerous water rescues.
The summertime heat continued to moderate more during the period, with no days reaching the 90 max threshold once again (87.5 the max reached on the 3rd). Maxes were in the more comfortable 70s on 6 days of the period with the remaing 5 days in the 80s, though still remaining muggy/damp throughout much of the period.
The current temperature is 68.2 degrees at 0645 on September 12 under cloudy skies. The max temperatures looks to hold mostly in the 70s in the coming days with minimal chances for rain, though the tropics are quite active right now with the peak of the hurricane season upon us. .
