Partly sunny, milder, dry update for Ground Hog Day Saturday, February 2, 2019 from West Rockville, Maryland

Partly sunny, milder, dry update for Ground Hog Day Saturday, February 2, 2019 from West Rockville, Maryland

Well the ground hog didn’t see his shadow so we are supposedly in for an early spring. Punxsatawney Phil has had about a 40% accuracy rate the past 10 years so I am not too worried about our snow chances for the next 6 weeks.

Partly cloudy, one more chilly early AM (lower teens) then milder PM (upper 30s) with temps getting above freezing and with some sun, the snowpack diminished during the day on Saturday unfortunately.

The maximum temperature was 38.4° at 1626.

The minimum temperature was 13.0° at 0651.

Dew point temperatures ranged from a low of 11° @ 0235 up to a high of 28° @ 1654.

Relative humidity values ranged from a high of 92% @ 0829 down to a low of 64% @ 1530.

Barometric pressure ranged from a high of 30.46″ @ 0016 down to a low of 30.19″ @ 2350.

Saturday had no new precipitation. My final January monthly total was 3.58″ with my year-to-date total now at 3.65″ for 2019. So far, my February total is 0.07″.

1.2″ of snow fell Friday not on Wednesday as I erroneously reported here yesterday. No snow fell on Saturday. Barely an inch of snow remains on the ground. My year-to-date snowfall is 16.1″ with the seasonal total at 18.2″.

My current online data (except for rainfall/snowfall – use the cocorahs link shown below for that dataset) is showing regularly on Weather Underground. My data is posted there every 5 minutes. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time now as it is being updated on a 5 minute interval. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDROCKV200

I contribute my precipitation data daily to CoCoRaHS as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/

Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge, just as it does on WxLink 2.0. The tipping bucket has been producing erratic values at times so should not be used save for general precipitation timing. For example during our big snowstorm back in mid-January the snow didn’t melt at all during the storm, and only started to record precipitation amounts a few days later when the sun and above freezing temperatures started to melt the snow.

I actually use the data I post to CoCoRaHS from my 4 inch CoCoRaHS gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day. I also use a snow stake outside my balcony window to get an idea on how much snow has fallen (while it is snowing) and how much snow is on the ground.

Sunday will moderate some more in temperature, with highs around 50° under partly cloudy skies and light winds. Lows will only be around 30°.

Scattered clouds with plenty of sun and mid 50s highs on Monday with lows above freezing in the mid 30s.

Partly cloudy with highs around 60° on Tuesday with lows around 30°.

The rest of the week looks mild and unsettled, with rain chances each day and temperatures mostly remaining above the freezing mark with highs in the 40s and 50s.

Midnight Saturday night found the temperature at 28.5°, relative humidity 83%, pressure falling at 30.19″ and the dew point at 24.0° under clear skies.

Currently at 0723 the temperature is 27.1° under sunny skies but high clouds and contrails scattered about, relative humidity at 89%, barometric pressure now rising at 30.20″, and the dew point at 24°.

Good morning from the (barely) snowywalrus on this clear, calm, barely snow-covered landscape here on Sunday. Today’s featured image was actually from Friday afternoon when we still had snow falling.
