Mostly cloudy, not so warm but humid update for West Rockville Maryland for Friday, August 31, 2018

A not so hot ending to the month of August, a mostly cloudy Friday with high humidity returning and occasional showers falling, mostly in the early AM hours (0.06″ between 0100-0200) and then a bit more in the early evening. High temps only reached the lower 80s with dew points predominately staying above 70° until a bit below that mark in the late evening. The Friday maximum temperature was 82.1° @ 1759, while the Friday minimum temperature was a mild 72.6° @ 2357. The dew point temperatures rose well into the 70s during the day till late evening when they lowered to around 70°, ranging from a high of 77° @ 1239 down to a low of 69° @ 2317. The barometric pressure rose quite a bit for summer – the lowest value being 30.09″ @ 0158 up to a high of 30.21″ @ 2211. The relative humidity rose some from yesterday, ranging from a high of 96% @ 0625 down to a low of 77% at 1652.

Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444 I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDrockv200#history/ I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/ Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge. I actually use the data I post to cocorahs from my 4″ cocorahs gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day.

Mostly cloudy, not as hot once again but more humid conditions returning with overnight showers (0.06″) around 0100-0200 early Friday morning that helped rise the dew points and temps closer to the mid 70s by sunrise. Saturday started out the new month of September with partly cloudy skies (see today’s featured image), highs in the low 80s once again, with thundershowers in the evening. Sunday will be partly cloudy and hot with a high of about 90° and low in the low 70s, only a 20 POP for an isolated shower or storm. Labor Day Monday will be hot once again (lower 90s) under continued partly cloudy skies and a 40 POP for PM thunderstorms. Lows will be in the low 70s through next Wednesday. Tuesday and Wednesday will be partly cloudy and hot with highs in the low 90s with only a 20 POP for an isolated shower.

At 0320, Channel 4 radar is showing no rain returns within the 4-state Mid-Atlantic region.

At 0320, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WX Bug station are as follows:

Mostly cloudy skies, mild and humid.

Station Relative Location Temp RH    DP     BP    Wind High/Low on Fri
VP2             Ground          71.3°  96% 70° 30.22″S NA   82.0°/72.0°

The total precipitation in the cocorahs gauge was 0.14″ through midnight Friday.
The VP2 tipping bucket recorded 0.12″ on Friday.

Friday’s precipitation was 0.14″
August precipitation total 7.67″
Year-to-date precipitation total 38.08″

WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 71° 100% 71° 30.25″S SSE 1 G ESE 5
                              140° from station                   Fri. Hi/Lo 82°/72°

The Lakewood rain gauge recorded 0.12″ of rain on Friday. Since midnight, however it has recorded 0.01″. The August total precipitation total is now showing 4.96″ with the 2018 year-to-date (YTD) amount now at 50.13″. I definitely continue to believe that at times the disparities between the Lakewood WX Bug station precipitation amount total for the month and year and my cocorahs gauge based data is that the Lakewood precip values are estimated/adjusted from radar.

At 2400 obs Friday night the temperature from the VP2 was 72.6° RH 89% BP 30.21″R DP 69.2°
Warm, moderately humid and partly cloudy.

Good morning from the cloudy, mild, and moderately humid home of the Walrus early on this Sunday.

  1. Well a quick check of cocorahs (not possible to do earlier when the system was down) over Aug 31 to Sep 1 shows amounts for stations in Maryland listed on this website:

    https://www.cocorahs.org/ViewData/TotalPrecipSummary.aspx

There are a handful of Montgomery County stations where I live and where Earth Networks is located, but there are no reporting stations within a few miles of Earth Networks Headquarters in Germantown. You will see station like mine at MD-MG-115 in West Rockville, and several fairly close by stations in Germantown, Gaithersburg and Rockville. The highest amount stations are in areas north and northeast of Baltimore with a few just to the south of that city. I saw a video of a flooded bridge in Harford County, which is a good 25-30 miles NE of Baltimore. Thanks for your question Nathan.
