Mostly cloudy, cooler, some light drizzle update for West Rockville Maryland for Sunday, August 19 2018

A back door cold front slipped through overnight and kept us cooler and cloudy on Sunday, a rather dense cover of clouds brought on with a moist NE flow off the Atlantic. Temps held in the 70s all day after upper mid 60s lows in the early AM. The high today of 79.4° is the coolest high temp in August so far, and first time under 80 since July 30. There was a trace of drizzle during the latter part of the day. The Sunday maximum temperature was 79.4°@ 1450, while the Sunday minimum temperature was 67.7°@ 0648. The dew point temperatures lowered from yesterday’s values, ranging from a high of 70° @ 0007 down to a low of 65° @ 0554. The barometric pressure rose a bit from Saturday’s values – the lowest value being 29.85″ @ 0000 down up a high of 30.06″@ 2220. The relative humidity was a bit lower than Saturday, ranging from a high of 92% @ 0133 down to a low of 66% at 1548.

Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444 I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDrockv200#history/ I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/ Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge. I actually use the data I post to cocorahs from my 4″ cocorahs gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day.

Sunday was a cloudy, cooler day brought in by a damp NE flow behind a back door cold front that passed on through in the Saturday overnight with highs in the upper 70s and lows in the upper mid 60s. We had some occasional drizzle during the late afternoon and evening (Trace amount). Monday has been cloudy and cooler so far, and looks to stay that way as the high temp so far today is only 74.4°. Tuesday should see highs in the lower 80s and lows in the upper 60s but with a much greater chance at showers or thundershowers (80 POP) and cloudy. After a 40 POP for AM showers on Wednesday, sun will dominate the rest of the workweek, with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s and lows in the upper 50s to around 60°.

Today’s featured image was actually a picture I took on Saturday from the cocorahs rain gauge site (with the gauge visible in the foreground) looking east over what was a partly cloudy sky at the time, about 1000 EDT

At 1502, Channel 4 radar is showing scattered showers over lower SE Maryland and SE Virginia, along with scattered showers centered around SW VA and neighboring areas. Drizzle in the area in spots but it doesn’t show well on radar.

At 1502, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WX Bug station are as follows:

Mostly cloudy skies (mid-level overcast continuing), comfortable temps but humid – still basically dry.

Station Relative Location Temp  RH   DP     BP    Wind High/Low temp on Sun
VP2             Ground           74.4° 82% 69° 30.10″F NA    79.4°/67.7°

The total precipitation in the cocorahs gauge was a trace from occasional drizzle through midnight Sunday.
The VP2 tipping bucket recorded 0.00″ on Sunday as trace amounts are not recorded by the VP2 gauge.

Sunday’s precipitation was a T.
August precipitation total 3.47″
Year-to-date precipitation total 33.88″

The WX Bug Lakewood gauge has come back online.

WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 73° 82% 67° 30.13″F ESE 3 G ESE 9
                              140° from station                   Sun. Hi/Lo 81°/67°

The Lakewood rain gauge recorded 0.00″ of rain on Sunday. The August total precipitation increased to a total of 2.38″ with the 2018 year-to-date (YTD) amount rising to 47.55″. I definitely continue to believe that at times the disparities between the Lakewood WX Bug station precipitation amount total for the month and year and my cocorahs gauge based data is that the Lakewood precip values are estimated/adjusted from radar.

At 2400 obs Sunday night the temperature from the VP2 was 71.0° RH 89% BP 30.04″F DP 67.6°
Cloudy, reasonably comfortable.

Good afternoon from the cloudy, comfortably cool and dry for the moment home of the Walrus on this Monday.
