A cloudy, threatening, muggy update for West Rockville Maryland for Sunday May 27, 2018
Sunday started out partly cloudy, muggy and very warm through the mid-afternoon, then clouds took over as storms entered the area. The devastating flooding rains that hit Ellicott City were so bad because of rounds of storms continued to batter that area for several hours (often called training), but my area remained mostly dry and out of the storm action that was less than 30 miles NE of me (just a light shower of 0.02″ falling around 2015-2030). Photo from the flooding shown in today’s featured image. A description of the photo and credit follows: “Water rushes through Main Street in Ellicott City, Md, Sunday, May 27, 2018. Flash flooding and water rescues are being reported in Maryland as heavy rain soaks much of the state. (Libby Solomon/The Baltimore Sun via AP)”
Temperatures warmed up into the mid 80s with AM lows in the muggy low 70s, but late evening provided the day’s minimum in the mid 60s by midnight observation time. The Sunday maximum temperature reached 86.1° @ 1510, while the Sunday minimum temperature was 67.1° @ 2359. The dew point temperatures were about the same as Saturday, ranging from a high of 75° @ 1652 down to a low of 65° @ 2358. The barometric pressure rose a bit from Saturday – lowest being 29.86″ @ 0217 up to a high of 30.05″ @ 2357. The relative humidity values were similar to Saturday, ranging from a high of 95% at 0249 down to a low of 59% at 1509.
Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444 I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDrockv200#history/ I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/ Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge. I actually use the data I post to cocorahs from my 4″ cocorahs gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day.
I had restless, inefficient rounds of sleep overnight, eventually arising by mid afternoon. I cleaned up much more of the refrigerator and put the vege/fruit drawers back into their right place to be ready for my small grocery order that came just after 1600. I ate a bowl of cereal right after the delivery, but used old milk that actually had gone bad. I drained it out of my bowl and used the new milk just delivered, along with sliced bananas. A bit later on for an early supper I ate some delicious sushi that came with the grocery order, freshly made just before delivery was made. I got quite a bit and it is best if eaten very soon. So I had about 1/2 of the order and will eat the rest today (Monday). Fresh ginger and wasabi accompanied each order, adding to the culinary experience. Everything was put away, in the finally relatively clean refrigerator. I monitored the 2 weather events of the day on TWC and national and local news stations. Flooding in Ellicott City was incredible, with Main Street turned into a raging river, carrying everything with it including several vehicles and even a collapsed building. There were numerous water rescues carried out. I spoke with Robin later on face-time with Gideon back on station in the bathtub providing amusement with his creative antics with a new toy watering sprinkler he was really enjoying. I texted briefly a few times with Marty about the weather situation in Ellicott City. He lives a lot closer to that area, only a bit NW, and got more rain than I did. I watched some baseball, but mostly the deciding game 7 of the Celtics/Cavaliers NBA playoff series, won by Cleveland 87-79, with a heavy contribution by All-world LeBron James of 35 points and much more. I did have some low sodium spicy V8 during the evening, along with my usual water, supplements and prescription medications.
Sunday was partly to mostly cloudy, muggy and quite warm though to mid-afternoon when clouds took over and started to cool us down all the way to the mid-upper 60s by midnight obs time. Amazingly enough all the storms and heavy showers in the region managed to mostly miss my specific location, with only a light (0.02″) shower falling around 2015-2030. Overnight into Memorial Day Monday we remained cloudy and muggy, with a bit of light rain/drizzle this morning (30 POP the rest of the AM). Starting out on a cooler note in the low 60s in the early AM, temps should rise only into the mid 70s by Monday afternoon with partly to mostly cloudy conditions but lessening chances of rain. As we return to the work week on Tuesday, cloudy skies continue with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the upper 60s, again with a 20 POP for rain. Wednesday should be cloudy once again, with highs in the mid 70s, lows in the upper 60s and a 60 POP for PM light rain. Thursday should be mostly cloudy with highs in the lower 80s and lows in the upper 60s and an 80 POP for thunderstorms which may be part of the remnants of Alberto, the center of which looks to remain well to the west tracking over Michigan and Indiana on its way north out of the Gulf. Friday should be partly cloudy, warm with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the upper 60s, with a 50 POP for PM thunderstorms. It looks like a damp, wet week but at least not as warm as it has been as we wrap up the very wet month of May.
On the Channel 4 radar at 0859 is showing only scattered light showers in the area, a bit more numerous to the S and SE of my location.
As of 0859, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WX Bug station are as follows:
Cloudy, not as warm, and damp with light showers/drizzle falling occasionally.
Station Relative Location Temp RH DP BP Wind High/Low temp on Sunday
VP2 Ground 62.5° 95% 61° 30.06″R NA 86.1°/67.1°
The total precipitation in the cocorahs gauge was 0.02″ through midnight Sunday. The VP2 tipping bucket reported 0.01″ of rain.
Sunday’s precipitation was 0.02″
May precipitation is now 6.03″
Year-to-date precipitation total is now 17.77″
WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 62° 100% 62° 30.09″R Calm G SW 8
140° from station (est) 87°/65°(true)
The Lakewood rain gauge recorded 0.08″ of precipitation on Sunday. May is now showing 7.11″ for the month with the 2018 year-to-date (YTD) amount of 21.91″. These monthly and yearly totals include 0.01″ which has fallen so far today since midnight. I continue to believe at times the great disparity between the Lakewood WX Bug station precipitation amount total for the month and year and my cocorahs gauge based data is that the Lakewood precip values are estimated/adjusted from radar.
At 2400 obs Saturday night the temperature from the VP2 was 67.1° RH 94% BP 30.04″R DP 65.3°
Cloudy, cooler, and muggy at 2400 Sunday
Good morning from the cloudy, cooler and damp (drizzly) home of the walrus on this Memorial Day Monday.

The rains this year have been ridiculous. The southern areas of Michigan were flooded a few weeks ago also. It seems that it never rains but it pours. We had some severe pop up storms again yesterday around Midland and Saginaw, just like the day before. They were very small cells but really packed a punch, but your area seems to have never ending storms this year. Prayers for all those affected.
Thanks Cathie. Though my area may be getting rocked often this year, my station has not. I almost totally missed the rains that dumped on Ellicott City on Sunday (I got 0.02″) and storms locally around my station seem to go elsewhere quite often, as I watch the local radar in amazement. Sure direct hits just seem to vanish into just a bit of light rain. I have had a lot of measurable rain days, particularly this month, but very few greater than 1 inch amounts all year (actually I have had a total of 5, 3 in May, 1 in both Feb and April). Greatest amount was 2.22″ in April. It almost always seems to be raining more elsewhere than my location. My annual total rainfall so far of 17.78″ is really just about normal for up to this point in the year. We tend to remember the most recent weather and forget about what happened in the early part of the year, like that really cold and dry weather of early January. Of course, the key thing to remember this week is our veterans, though I was not one. My Dad fought in WW2 over in England and have pictures of him in uniform during his active duty. Have a great day, and stay dry. I am sure we will have dry and hot days ahead, and we need to save any rain we get now and have gotten earlier this year for these dry, hot days ahead. Kevin
