Very cool, cloudy update for West Rockville Maryland for Tuesday April 17, 2018
Tuesday was dry, but still cloudy and very cool for mid-April. A typical Tuesday afternoon image is shown as today’s featured image. Flooding is still ongoing in spots, particularly near major rivers in the area like the Potomac River, closest to me. Whites Ferry, to my NW and the only ferry working on the Potomac River these days, has been closed for the past few days due to high water and lots of debris in the river that could mess up the ferry boat while transiting. The Tuesday maximum temperature was only 44.2 @ 1339 and the Tuesday minimum temperature was 37.9 @ 2353. The dew point temperatures were quite low, ranging from a high of 32 @ 0000 down to 24 @ 2242 as drier air started to filter in. The Barometric Pressure started out at its lowest point of 29.76″ at 0000, rising slowly during the day to hit its high for the day of 29.90″ @ 2252. Relative humidity values finally started to drop off, ranging from 67% @ 0000 down to 49% @ 1344.

I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDrockv200#history/ I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/ Please remember that Weather Underground does not report snow data, and reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge. I use the data I post to cocorahs as my “official” precipitation total each day.
Overnight Tuesday into Wednesday skies stayed cloudy but dry at first, then towards sunrise cleared off with a totally clear sky now at 0835. Wednesday should start to warm up under sunny skies, with highs in the low 60s and lows in the upper 40s. Thursday should be mostly cloudy, windy and cooler with wind chills down in the 30s most of the day, with daytime highs in the low 50s and lows in the low-mid 30s. Friday should be sunny and continued cool, with highs in the mid 50s and lows in the mid 30s. Saturday will start a slow warmup, with highs in the upper 50s under mostly sunny skies and lows in the upper 30s. Sunday should be partly cloudy and a tad warmer, with highs in the low 60s and lows in the lower 40s.
Tuesday was a slow day, but I did start compiling my weather data spreadsheet with my March data. I also did a bit of Science Fair updating. I spoke with Robin via Face-Time late with Gideon providing his usual show in the bathtub and Ray (late) and Marty (early) for a post-event discussion of our recent rainstorm.
As of 0835, the NBC4 Weather Radar is showing a clear sky in the 4 state mid-atlantic region at this time. The closest returns are found in upstate NY and Northern New England with scattered snow showers, and to the west way out in Iowa the next snowstorm is giving that region snow currently.
As of 0835, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WXBug station are as follows:
Clear and cold. We didn’t quite make it to the freezing mark this (Wednesday) morning, bottoming out at 32.6 very early at 0431.
Station Relative Location Temp RH DP BP Wind High/Low temp Tuesday
VP2 Ground 39.4° 61% 27° 29.97″R NA 44.2/37.9
The total precipitation in the cocorahs gauge was 0.00″ through midnight Tuesday. The VP2 tipping bucket rain gauge under my balcony recorded 0.00″ through midnight Tuesday.
Tuesday’s precipitation was 0.00″
April precipitation 2.42″
April snowfall 0.0″ (will be reported till the end of April)
The seasonal snowfall total is 12.0″.
Year-to-date precipitation total is 10.59″
WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 39 58 25 29.94″R NW 3 G SW 11
140° from station 44/37
The Lakewood rain gauge reported 0.05″ of precipitation on Tuesday. It is now reporting a total of 2.16″ of precipitation for April and a 2018 year-to-date (YTD) amount of 13.03″. I still think the great disparity between the Lakewood WX Bug station precipitation amount total for the month and year and my cocorahs gauge based data is that Lakewood precip values are estimated/adjusted from radar.
At 2400 obs Tuesday night the temperature from the VP2 was 37.9 RH 59% BP 29.90″S DP 24.8
Cloudy, very cool, drying out at 2400
Good morning from the sunny, drying out, very cool home of the snowless walrus on this Wednesday.
