A cloudy, snowy early AM, mostly to partly cloudy to clear, not as cold update for West Rockville Maryland on Saturday, December 30 2017

Saturday was cloudy and cold, with a period of light snow (0.5″) overnight, as best I can tell between the hours of 0100 and 0500, with additional light flurries later on in the late morning into the afternoon. A dim sun emerged by late morning after the snow clouds moved on. By mid-afternoon full sun returned, and temperatures rose to just about freezing, the warmest max temp since the 26th. Tonight another shot of cold air has taken over, with temps back in the teens early this New Years Eve Sunday. The Saturday minimum temperature from the VP2 (19.8°) was recorded at 2358 while the maximum temperature (31.7°) was recorded at 1526. Dew point temperatures ranged from 8° at 2123 up to 23° at 1300. Relative humidity values were higher than yesterday’s values (89% – 53%). Barometric values continued to fall after hitting its max for this cold snap of 30.71″ on Thursday. Saturday’s range went from a morning max of 30.28″ at 0000 down to 29.97″ later at 1505.

Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444.

I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115. Please take note that Weather Underground does not report snow data, and reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge.

I was up in the later afternoon after a night of weird dreams, to get ready for the big Badgers game at the Orange Bowl in the evening. I had a bowl of my usual cereal, sliced bananas and coffee for a late breakfast and later on a sausage egg and cheese biscuit from the microwave. I measured the snow early (1030) so I could get a better measurement without evaporation, sublimation, or melting affecting the total. I spoke with both Tracy and Robin this afternoon and early evening along with an early evening call from Marty and a late night call from Ray. I watched the Saturday night Orange Bowl that featured my Badgers taking on Miami in Miami’s Orange Bowl in the mid-late evening. It was an exciting game at times, wtih Wisconsin winning 34-24 after falling behind 14-3 in the first quarter. I had some of my spicy low-sodium V8, and my usual water, vitamins, medications/supplements later.

We have clear skies now and cold with temps in the mid teens. New Years Eve Sunday should plunge us back into the deep freeze, with high temps in the low-mid 20s and lows down around 10° under partly to mostly cloudy skies. New Years Day should be mostly sunny and cold once again, with highs in the low-mid 20s and lows in the upper single digits. Tuesday should be sunny and a few degrees less cold than Monday, then Wednesday partly sunny with highs in the low 30s and lows in the mid teens.

On the Channel 4 weather website at 0512 radar is showing an area of light snow over parts of the Midwest, mostly in IL and MO at this time. Otherwise the East Coast looks pretty clear right now under strong HIGH pressure.

As of 0512, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WXBug station are as follows :

Station Relative Location Temp RH DP    BP      Wind    High/Low temp today
VP2            Ground         16.0  62   5 30.34R     NA       31.7/19.8

There was 0.05″ of melted (done inside my apartment) snow (SWE) in the cocorahs gauge on Saturday. I measured an average of 0.5″ of snow from 6 measurements on my snow board (see featured image showing my gauge and snowboard at 1030 AM when I measured my snowfall on the snowboard and swapped out the gauge for melting inside to get the SWE for the snow). The VP2 tipping bucket rain gauge under my balcony recorded no precipitation on Saturday through midnight, as the snow did not melt through the tipping spoons at all due to below freezing temps.

December precipitation is 0.85″ through midnight obs Saturday.

December snowfall is 3.8″. The seasonal snowfall total is 3.8″.

Year-to-date precipitation total is 39.36″

The Lakewood rain gauge/WX station is back online. It reported 0.03″ of precipitation through midnight on Saturday. It is reporting 1.26″ for the month and 40.60″ for the year. It does not report any snow data, unfortunately.

Temp from the VP2 at 2400 was 19.8 RH 60% BP 30.25R DP 8.1. Clear, cold and dry.

Good morning from the clear, cold, and happily still snowy Walrus early on this Sunday morning. Most of my 0.5″ snow accumulation from early Saturday is still around, though the sidewalks and roadways cleared off courtesy of Saturday’s afternoon sun.
