A partly cloudy, colder update for West Rockville Maryland on Wednesday, December 27 2017

Wednesday was partly cloudy, still blustery at times but diminishing some in that regard, but colder than yesterday. In fact we are having our coldest minimums of the season so far, well down into the teens, and that will continue over the next several days. I saw a few flakes of snow in the morning, but that only results in a trace amount and doesn’t add to my seasonal snowfall total since a trace cannot be quantified. The Wednesday minimum temperature from the VP2 (16.7°) was recorded at 2345 while the maximum temperature (30.3°) was recorded almost 24 hours earlier at 0031. Dew point temperatures ranged from 18° at 0637 down to 2° at 1820. Relative humidity values raised a bit from yesterday’s values (69% – 42%). Barometric values keep getting higher, which is typical of cold arctic winter outbreaks, ranging from an early morning min of 30.47″ at 0119 up to 30.64″ 22 hours later at 2319.

Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444.

I am also now on weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115. Please take note that Weather Underground does not report snow data, and reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge.

I worked on the final form of my November data summary, spreadsheet and tables that I finally got to email out just a little while ago so many of you should see it in your inbox.  I posted my summary on a blogpost on weathertogether a bit earlier. I talked a few times with Ray (his flip phone is working great) and late into the evening we managed to order him a LaCrosse weather station that he can use to back up his barograph. Amazon delivery for him should be this Friday.

We have a broken overcast this Thursday morning, with temps still in the mid teens and dew points just above the zero mark. During the day on Thursday we should be a bit colder, with highs in the mid 20s and lows in the mid teens under partly sunny skies. Friday should moderate to high temps just over the freezing mark (mid 30s) under partly cloudy skies, with lows in the low 20s. Saturday should be cloudy with highs in the low 30s and only a 20 POP for snow, lows in the mid teens. New Years Eve Sunday should plunge us back into the deep freeze, with high temps in the mid 20s and lows down around 10° under partly sunny skies. New Years Day should be mostly sunny and cold once again, with highs in the low-mid 20s and lows in the upper single digits. The cold looks to persist well into the new year, with near-miss snow chances that should be monitored in the changeable cold pattern we are in.

On the Channel 4 weather website at 0827 radar is showing only light scattered snow showers way to the north in parts of Northern New England and NY state and southern Quebec, along with areas of light snow over parts of the Midwest, particularly in IA, MN and WI extending some into northern IL as well.

As of 0827, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WXBug station are as follows :

Station Relative Location Temp RH DP   BP      Wind   High/Low temp today
VP2            Ground         14.0  62  3   30.71R   NA       30.3/16.7

There was a trace of snow/precipitation in the cocorahs gauge on Wednesday. The VP2 tipping bucket rain gauge under my balcony recorded no precipitation on Wednesday through midnight, as it doesn’t record trace amounts, particularly light trace snowfall amounts.

December precipitation is 0.80″ through midnight obs Wednesday.

December snowfall is 3.3″. The seasonal snowfall total is 3.3″.

Year-to-date precipitation total is 39.31″

WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 13 66 3 30.64R NW 11 G NW 16
                            140° from station                        30/15

The Lakewood rain gauge reported no precipitation through midnight on Wednesday. They are still reporting 1.13″ for the month and 40.47″ for the year, still questionable amounts in my mind.

Temp from the VP2 at 2400 was 16.7 RH 52% BP 30.63S DP 2.1. Clear, cold and dry

Good morning from the partly (broken) cloudy, cold, but still snowless Walrus early on this Thursday morning.
