A milder, partly to mostly cloudy update for West Rockville Maryland on Sunday, December 17 2017
Sunday was a catch up day, busy all day with Christmas planning, weather report backlog cleanup, and plenty of great NFL football action. besides the usual email, facebook, laundry and meal preparation/consuming. The result? Higher chances of unintentional errors in my data reporting with this report. I apologize for any or all errors and as always will fix them if you report them to me. Thanks!
Sunday was a partly to mostly cloudy, milder day with rainfall overhead according to the radar but not reaching the ground at all that I know of. I had one more freezing overnight that yielded a few pockets of black ice in spots, but quickly dried up as daylight progressed along. Temps warmed into the upper 40s just after noon, then slowly dropped off the rest of the day as clouds increased. Temps only reached the low 40s by midnight obs. The Sunday minimum temperature from the VP2 (28.5°) was recorded at 0228 while the maximum temperature (49.2°) was recorded at 1258. Dew point temps ranged from 24° at 0205 up to 35° at 1253. Relative humidity values dropped a bit from yesterday’s (85% – 51%). Barometric values rose a bit higher than yesterday, ranging from a high of 30.30″ at 1044 down to 30.17″ much later at 2309, near the end of my observation day.
Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444.
I am also now on weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115. Please take note that Weather Underground does not report snow data, and reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge.
Milder at the start of the coming week, with highs in the low 50s on Monday under partly cloudy skies and upper 50s on Tuesday under mostly sunny skies. Lows both days should be around 40°. Wednesday and Thursday should cool somewhat into the mid 40s for highs, partly cloudy on Wednesday and sunny on Thursday, with lows both days in the mid-upper 20s. Unsettled weather over the Christmas weekend and cooler at first look right now.
On the Channel 4 weather website at 0737 radar is showing some rain over LA and AL, scattered showers over parts of MI in the warmer air, and snow showers and flurries in parts of western NY and northern New England at this time.
As of 0737, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WXBug station are as follows :
Station Relative Location Temp RH DP BP Wind High/Low temp today
VP2 Ground 33.8 89 31 30.15S NA 49.2/28.5
There was no melted precipitation in the cocorahs gauge on Sunday. The VP2 tipping bucket rain gauge under my balcony registered 0.01″ of water collected on Sunday at 1020, apparently the last of the frozen accumulation from the recent snow. The only reasonable explanation at this point. Radar was clear at the time, and skies were mostly sunny.
December precipitation is 0.43″ through midnight obs Sunday.
December snowfall is now 3.3″. The seasonal snowfall total is 3.3″.
Year-to-date precipitation total is 38.94″
WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 34 96 33 30.12S Calm

The Lakewood rain gauge recorded no precipitation through midnight on Sunday. They are now reporting 0.59″ of precipitation falling up to this point in December, and a grand total of 39.93″ of rain for the year-to-date value. That is another gain of 0.06″ from what they reported on Friday. Further study and research will have to be done to figure out where these only partially accounted for amounts are coming from.
Temp from the VP2 at 2400 was 41.4 RH 76% BP 30.17S DP 34.6. Mostly cloudy, mild but dry
Good morning from the mostly clear, mild, snow-less Walrus early on this Monday morning.
