A partly to mostly cloudy, cold update for West Rockville Maryland on Wednesday, December 13 2017
Wednesday was a partly cloudy, cold, and blustery day in the AM and early PM, then I had increasing clouds in the mid-afternoon and lessening winds brought on by more clipper action that was mostly active to the north in PA, OH, NJ and NY and near the MD/PA border with light snow showers and flurries in the evening. I did not receive any measurable snow, but see a few flurries (T) on occasion after dark. Temps held at 31 for several hours, dew point was 12 in the late afternoon but then when the snow was overhead, the dew point rose to 20 before sliding downwards again in the late evening to the mid teens. Also late the air temperature started to rise to above freezing before midnight obs and remained that way overnight. The Tuesday minimum temperature from the VP2 (20.3°) was recorded at 0712 while the maximum temperature (33.7°) was recorded at 2330, after a mini-afternoon max of 31.1 at 1625. Temps dropped thereafter for a short while, then started to rise in the evening up to obs time.. Dew point temps ranged from +4° in the very early AM (0309) up to 21° at 1940. Relative humidity values lowered some today (66% – 42%). Barometric values were roughly the same as yesterday, ranging from a high of 29.87″ at 1006 down to 29.60″ late at 2355. Check out the graph file below and as my featured image of my daily temps, barometer, and dew points.
Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444.
I am also now on weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115. Please take note that Weather Underground does not report snow data, and reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge.
Thursday should moderate some under partly cloudy skies with highs in the upper 30s and lows in the low 20s. Friday should have partly cloudy skies with high temps in the mid 30s and lows in the upper-mid 20s and no chance for snow. Milder over the weekend with partly cloudy skies on Saturday and highs in the mid 40s, lows in the upper 20s, then partly cloudy on Sunday, with highs in the mid 40s and lows in the mid 30s.
On the Channel 4 weather website at 1000 radar is showing scattered snow shower action over much of PA, a bit of WV, then heading NE into NJ and mostly coastal NE but also over parts of northern NH.
As of 1000, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WXBug station are as follows :

VP2 Ground 38.8 61 27 29.78R NA 33.7/20.3
There was a trace of precipitation/snow in the cocorahs gauge on Wednesday. The VP2 tipping bucket rain gauge under my balcony registered no precipitation on Wednesday, as it doesn’t record trace amounts.
December precipitation is 0.40″ through midnight obs Wednesday.
December snowfall is 3.1″. The seasonal snowfall total is also 3.1″.
Year-to-date precipitation total is 38.91″

The Lakewood rain gauge recorded no precipitation through midnight on Wednesday. Remember, as is the case with my VP2 tipping bucket rain gauge, these automatic devices do not record trace amounts. They are still reporting 0.47″ of precipitation falling up to this point in December, and a grand total of 39.81″ of rain for the year-to-date value.
Temp from the VP2 at 2400 was 33.6 RH 50% BP 29.60F DP 17. Mostly cloudy, cold and dry at midnight.
Good morning from the mostly cloudy, milder snow-less Walrus early on this Thursday morning.
