Cloudy, foggy, dense at times AM, then becoming sunny and warmer PM update for Thursday, February 21, 2019 for West Rockville Maryland
Cloudy overnight with fog, at times quite dense, developing around dawn and extending well into the daylight hours of the morning with temps holding just above or at the freezing mark. Becoming sunny and warmer in the PM, with the fog burning off and the snowpack rapidly melting, temperatures soaring into the mid 50s by mid-afternoon. Temperatures remained mild through the evening hours and overnight, only dropping off to the mid 40s by midnight and holding there till dawn on Friday. Clouds redeveloped towards morning and helped put a ceiling on the temperature drop. Snow cover dropped by midnight to a trace amount, with mostly man-made snow piles predominating along with scant amounts in protected locations away from the strong sun.
The maximum temperature was 54.0° at 1604.
The minimum temperature was 31.6° at 0739.
The dew point temperatures ranged from a high of 41° @ 1207 down to a low of 27° @ 2253.
The relative humidity values ranged from a high of 96% @ 0720 down to a low of 40% @ 1708.
The barometric pressure ranged from a low of 30.00″ @ 0345 up to a high of 30.25″ @ 2350.
Thursday had no precipitation. My February monthly total is still 2.61″ with my year-to-date total at 6.19″ for 2019.
No snow/sleet fell on Thursday. My February total snowfall is now 7.3″ with the seasonal total at 24.3″. Snow on the ground at midnight has dropped to a Trace amount.
My current online data (except for rainfall/snowfall – use the cocorahs link shown below for that dataset) is showing regularly on Weather Underground. My data is posted there every 5 minutes. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time now as it is being updated on a 5 minute interval. The web address for my data on weather underground is:
https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDROCKV200
I contribute my precipitation data daily to CoCoRaHS as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/
Please remember that my Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge, just as it does on WxLink 2.0. The tipping bucket has been producing erratic values at times so should not be used except for general precipitation timing. For example during our big snowstorm back in mid-January the snow didn’t melt at all during the storm, and only started to record precipitation amounts a few days later when the sun and above freezing temperatures started to melt the snow. This scenario developed nicely on Thursday as the sun melted most if not all of the snow in the tipping bucket rain gauge. 0.86″ melted through the tipping bucket all day Thursday even though no precipitation fell from the sky.
I actually use the data I post to CoCoRaHS from my 4 inch CoCoRaHS gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day. I also use a snow stake outside my balcony window to get an idea on how much snow has fallen (while it is snowing) and how much snow is on the ground as I did on Wednesday.
Friday should be cloudy and cooler. High temps should be in the mid 40s with lows once again around the freezing mark.
Saturday looks cloudy and cooler with a good chance for rain with temps around 40°.
Sunday looks cloudy and rainy during the earlier part of the day, but with partial afternoon sun temps could reach the mid-upper 60s. Lows around the freezing mark.
Monday should be sunny and breezy with highs in the mid 40s and lows in the mid 20s.
Tuesday should be mostly sunny with highs in the mid 40s and lows in the mid 20s.
Midnight Thursday night found the temperature at 46.6°, relative humidity 44%, pressure rising at 30.25″ and the dew point at 28.4° under a partly cloudy sky. There was only a trace of snow on the ground at my snow stake.
Currently at 0750 the temperature is 43.4° under mostly cloudy (altostratus) skies, relative humidity at 54%, barometric pressure rising at 30.38″, and the dew point at 28°.
Good morning from the almost snowless walrus (once again) on this cloudy Friday. One more snowy image from Wednesday’s snow is today’s featured image. This was the first pass of the sidewalk snow blower earlier in the morning. That late burst near storm’s end covered his path again somewhat and had to be cleared again in the afternoon.
