AUGUST 22-31, 2020 – SUMMER HEAT LESSENS MORE AS LIGHT TROPICAL MOISTURE FROM HURRICANE LAURA REMNANTS KEEPS THE AREA DAMP IN WEST ROCKVILLE MARYLAND
The relentless heat from July stayed away during this last August period. but the dew points remained high through most of the days till the last few days with dew
points dropping into the 50s to foreshadow the coming fall.
This last third of August period’s rains (0.95″ total) were from a persistent SW flow of sub-tropical moisture, highlighted by a visit from the Hurricane Laura remnants on the 29th. There were 3 thunderstorm days with 1 Sunny/Clear day, 6 Partly Cloudy and 3 Cloudy days.
We finished August with 8.67 inches of rain and 37.78 inches for the year through August 31. The minimum temperature for this period was 63.8° on the 30th. During this latest 10 day period the highest temperature reached was 89.1° on the 27th. Note the cool max of 74.4 on the 31st, second coolest max for the entire month. Minimum temperatures below 70 were more comfortably recorded on 3 days with the remaining 7 in the 70s during the period.

8/31 0.28 74.4 65.8 Cloudy, cooler, occasional rain, 2nd coolest max for month, lighter winds – 12 SE
6 of the 10 days in the period received measurable rain, but all were relatively light amounts below 0.5 inch. Three of the 6 days had thunderstorms, albeit quite
light in intensity. The total for this ten day period was 0.95″. The highlight rain event was the passage of the remnants of Laura on August 29, but amounts locally
at my station were quite light, and winds were only moderate (29 MPH from the west)
The heat moderated some more during the period, with no days reaching the 90 max threshold (89.1 the max reached on the 27th). Maxes on the first 8 days of the
period reached the 80s with the last 2 days remaining in the 70s, though still remaining muggy/damp throughout the period.
The current temperature is 74.0 degrees at 0945 on September 2 with cloudy, muggy conditions. The max temperature looks to rise into the upper 80s today through
Friday with strong to severe thunderstorms possibly developing each day.
