Partly to mostly cloudy, very warm and humid with heavy thunderstorm late on Saturday early on Sunday update Wednesday, July 31 through  Sunday, August 4 2019 for West Rockville Maryland

Back on multiple day reports spanning two different months today, trying to get caught up on my records. I still need to post the records for July 23 through July 30 but will do that when I get the chance, as I did make my last post covering that period during my birthday celebrations and the surprise visit by my daughter Robin and my grandson Gideon during most of that period. I will condense this post similarly to others I have made in the past. .

Wednesday July 31 was a cloudy, not so warm, moderately humid one with storms expected but never materializing. High temps were in the lower mid 80s and lows were in lower 70s. both in the early AM and late PM Dew points remained moderately high all day, ranging from early AM values in the upper 60s to the lower 70s by mid-day and then back down into the upper 60s by late evening. I will summarize the month of July later, but quickly I do want to mention that I had 16 days with max temps of 90 or more, and 17 days with min temps of 70 or greater.

The maximum temperature was 83.9 degrees at 1600.

The minimum temperature was 71.3 degrees at 0556.

There was no precipitation on Wednesday. There was a total of 7.03 inches of rain total  in July. I believe I had 10 days with measurable rain during the month, but I want to double-check that and report the correct amount later when I do my monthly summary. The year-to-date total precipitation is now 29.69 inches.

Thursday August 1 was partly cloudy, hotter and moderately humid but dry. High temps essentially reached the 90 mark in the later mid afternoon after a relatively pleasant early AM low in the upper mid 60s.  Dew points remained moderately high once again. After early AM values in the mid 60s, the dew point rose into the lower mid 70s by mid-day. The dew point lowered back into the upper 60s by observation time.

The barometric pressure ranged from a high of 30.15 inches @ 0927 down to a low of 30.05 inches @ 1847.

There was no measurable precipitation on Friday. There has been a total of 0.00 inches of rain so far in August. The year-to-date total is 29.69 inches.

Saturday August 3 was partly to mostly cloudy, warmer, a tad more  humid and dry most of the day till late evening thunderstorms dropped a deluge that (literally) spilled over into Sunday and brought the temps down into the low 70s which was the recorded low for the day, just a bit lower than the AM min. High temps reached around the 90 mark in the mid afternoon after a not as pleasant early AM low in the low 70s.  Dew points were higher in the AM hours then dropped with the storms late in the evening.  After AM values rising into the mid 70s, the dew point actually lowered into the upper 60s during the late evening thunderstorm activity.

The maximum temperature was 89.6 degrees at 1606.

There was a total of 1.16 inches of precipitation late on Saturday. There has been a total of 1.16 inches of rain so far in August. The year-to-date total is 30.85 inches. Midnight observation had heavy rain and wind, and my tipping bucket recorded its heaviest rates and rainfall after midnight due to the lag in recording intense rainfall when it is occurring. I personally observed the sheets of raining pouring down, with numerous loud rumbles of thunder and quite intense lightning.

Sunday August 4 was cloudy overnight with the heavy thunderstorm that started on Saturday continuing through the first few hours of the day. See further discussions on the storm below and in Saturday’s post. During the day clouds cleared partially, and warmth (but not as much as yesterday) and humidity continued moderately, with dew points dropping into the lower 60s by evening. High temps reached  the upper mid 80s in the mid afternoon after a wet AM min during the thunderstorm in the upper 60s. Dew points were higher in the AM hours then dropped into the lower mid 60s by evening, and higher mid 60s by midnight during the late evening thunderstorm activity.

The maximum temperature was 87.7 degrees at 1616.

The minimum temperature was 69.6 degrees at 0021.

There was a total of 0.45 inches of precipitation early on Sunday. There has been a total of 1.61 inches of rain so far in August. The year-to-date total is 31.30 inches. Midnight observation from Saturday had heavy rain and wind, and my tipping bucket recorded its heaviest rates and rainfall right after midnight due to the lag in recording intense rainfall when it is falling. I personally observed the sheets of raining pouring down, with numerous loud rumbles of thunder and quite intense lightning continuing for a few hours in the very early hours of Sunday.

My current online data (except for rainfall/snowfall – use the cocorahs link shown below) is showing regularly on Weather Underground. My data is posted there every 5 minutes. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, available in real-time as it is being updated on a 5 minute interval.
The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDROCKV200

I contribute my precipitation data daily to CoCoRaHS as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 and can be found on the web at https://www.cocorahs.org

Please remember that my Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge, just as it does on WxLink 2.0. The tipping bucket has been producing erratic values every day of late so should not be used except for general precipitation timing. (for example, it recorded 2.15″ of rain for today, with a 16.94″ rain rate at 0021 that was way over what actually occurred)

I actually use the data I post to CoCoRaHS from my 4 inch CoCoRaHS gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day.

I have slowly been recovering from the whirlwind birthday visit by my daughter and grandson for my birthday, eating up leftover pizza and PF Changs coconut curry the first few days after they left, then working on some other items out of my new, very cold refrigerator/freezer which got delivered during Robin’s visit.  I have been enjoying the 4 game sweep the Yankees laid on the Red Sox this past weekend, and generally appalled and grossed out by the recent mass shootings. I managed to finally get my June weather summary finished and emailed off to the NJWO last night, and now working on getting this thread caught up. We have a nice paella and live jazz music party for the National Night Out this Tuesday that I managed to sign up for.

It has been a cloudy, cooler Monday, with temps reaching no higher than the mid 80s with dew points around the 70 mark.

Tuesday should be hot and mostly sunny with some clouds, highs around 90 and lows around 70. Wednesday should feature similar temps and dew points (in the low-mid 70s) with a 50 POP for showers/storms.  Thursday through Saturday should feature mostly sunny, drier skies with slightly cooler temps in the mid 80s by day, mid-upper 60s by night.

Midnight Sunday recorded a temperature of 74.1 degrees, relative humidity 80%, pressure steady at 29.95 inches and the dew point temperature at 67.5 degrees under partly cloudy skies.

Currently at 1637 the temperature is 84.6 degrees under cloudy skies, relative humidity at 64%, barometric pressure falling at 29.94 inches, and the dew point temperature at 71 degrees.

Good late afternoon from the walrus on this cloudy Monday. The featured image is of a refreshing pool picture with my grandson on my birthday at the Gaithersburg Hilton indoor pool. Robin and Gideon stayed there during their visit recently.
