Partly sunny, warmer, more humid with mid-afternoon severe thunderstorms update for Thursday, May 23, 2019 from West Rockville Maryland

Thursday was partly cloudy in the AM with building humidity and warmer temperatures coupled with an advancing frontal system in the afternoon that led to a line of severe thunderstorms that rumbled through around 1530. It knocked out power in our complex for a few hours. Winds gusted over 50 MPH at times, as some trees became horizontal in the powerful winds. Rainfall was moderate (0.45″) as the storms only lasted a half an hour or so. Temps were around 60°  for early AM lows rose into the upper mid 80s prior to the storms in the early afternoon. Temperatures slowly fell off after the storms as the air slowly dried out. The storms did quite a bit of damage in the area, with a tornado in the Columbia MD area reported

The maximum temperature was 87.0° at 1445.

The minimum temperature was 59.8° at 0542.

The dew point temperatures ranged from a low of 51° @ 0000 up to a high of 72° @ 1440.

The relative humidity values ranged from a low of 57% @ 1452 up to a high of 93% @ 1607.

The barometric pressure ranged from a high of 30.25 @ 0007 down to a low of 29.94″ @ 2352.

There was 0.45″ of precipitation falling on Thursday. An unofficial max rain rate of 1.42″/hour was recorded by my VP2 at 1533 during the height of the storm. May now has a total rainfall of 5.13″. The year-to-date total is now 19.18″.

My current online data (except for rainfall/snowfall – use the cocorahs link shown below for that dataset) is showing regularly on Weather Underground. My data is posted there every 5 minutes. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time now as it is being updated on a 5 minute interval. The web address for my data on weather underground is:
https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDROCKV200

I contribute my precipitation data daily to CoCoRaHS as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/

Please remember that my Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge, just as it does on WxLink 2.0. The tipping bucket has been producing erratic values every day of late so should not be used except for general precipitation timing.

I actually use the data I post to CoCoRaHS from my 4 inch CoCoRaHS gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day.

Friday should be mostly sunny and seasonablyl warm and dry, with highs in the low 80s and lows in the upper 50s.

Saturday should be partly cloudy with highs around 80° and lows in the mid 60s. .

Sunday should be summery hot, with highs around 90° and lows in the mid 60s with increasing chances of showers and thunderstorms once again.

Right now Memorial Day Monday looks partly sunny and warm, with highs in the low-mid 80s and lows in the mid 60s.

Thereafter, the midweek period looks partly cloudy, dry but hot with high temps reaching or exceeding the 90° mark and lows in the 70° – 75° range.

Midnight Thursday recorded a temperature of 70.4°, relative humidity 94%, pressure falling slightly at 29.95″

Good morning from the walrus on this very pleasant Friday. For today’s featured (attached) image, I took a similar picture to yesterday’s out at my rain gauge looking west just prior to sunset around 2015 after my trivia game showing some high clouds left over from the earlier storms.
