The weekend rainstorm of Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20, 2019 from West Rockville, Maryland
Saturday started out relatively mild in the mid-upper 30s and stayed that way all day. Clouds thickened and rain started to fall around 1700 and continued the rest of the day. There was still 1 inch of snow on the ground by the end of the day, but it was disappearing fast under the steady rain and above freezing temperatures.
Saturday
The maximum temperature was 38.4° at 0230.
The minimum temperature was 35.1° at 1750.
Dew point temperatures ranged from a low of 32° @ 0231 up to a high of 36° @ 2107.
Relative humidity values ranged from a low of 77% @ 0244 up to a high of 95% @ 2059.
Barometric pressure ranged from a high of 30.24″ @ 0931 down to a low of 29.67″ @ 2342.
Saturday had 0.93″ of precipitation but no snow. There was 1″ of snow left on the ground by observation time.
Sunday started out in the AM hours with cloudy, mild and rainy conditions till about 0730 when drying conditions started to take hold. Colder air filtered in all day under increasing NW winds. Low 40s temps in the early AM during the rain gave way to much colder temps as the day progressed, bottoming out in the mid teens by midnight observation time. There was barely a trace of snow left on the ground by the end of the day.
Sunday
The maximum temperature was 41.7° at 0356.
The minimum temperature was 15.0° at 2359.
Dew point temperatures ranged from a high of 41° @ 0345 down to a low of -1° @ 2309.
Relative humidity values ranged from a high of 96% @ 0215 down to a low of 43% @ 2124.
Barometric pressure ranged from a low of 29.33″ @ 0540 up to a high of 30.08″ @ 2359.
Sunday had 0.35″ of precipitation. Combined with Saturday’s total my January monthly total is now 2.36″ and also is my year-to-date total for 2019.
My year-to-date snowfall is 12.7″ with the seasonal total at 14.8″. There was a trace of snow on the ground at midnight obs time
My current online data (except for rainfall/snowfall – use the cocorahs link shown below for that dataset) is showing regularly on Weather Underground. My data is posted there every 5 minutes. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time now as it is being updated on a 5 minute interval. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDROCKV200
I contribute my precipitation data daily to CoCoRaHS as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/
Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge, just as it does on WxLink 2.0. The tipping bucket has been producing erratic values at times so should not be used save for general precipitation timing. For example during last weekend’s snowstorm the snow didn’t melt at all during the storm, and only started to record precipitation amounts a few days later when the sun and above freezing temperatures started to melt the snow as shown earlier in this post.
I actually use the data I post to CoCoRaHS from my 4 inch CoCoRaHS gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day. I also use a snow stake outside my balcony window to get an idea on how much snow has fallen (while it is snowing) and how much snow is on the ground.
Good very early morning from the Walrus on this clear, very cold Tuesday morning. My next post should get me caught up with Monday’s and Tuesday’s very chilly temperatures along with the additional features of current and future conditions that I have not been including in my catch-up posts. One more January 12-13 snowstorm picture is included as today’s feature image.
