The big weekend snowstorm of Saturday January 12 and Sunday January 13, 2019 update for West Rockville, Maryland

Saturday was cloudy and cold with light snow starting in the late afternoon and continuing steadily the rest of the day. Temps hit the high for the day in the early afternoon with temperatures in the mid 30s but dropped to the low 30s after the snow started and slid down further into the upper 20s by midnight.

Saturday

The maximum temperature was 34.6° at 1303.

The minimum temperature was 26.4° at 0554.

Dew point temperatures ranged from a low of 16° @ 0015 up to a high of 27° @ 1715.

Relative humidity values ranged from a low of 52% @ 1230 up to a high of 93% @ 2155.

Barometric pressure ranged from a low of 30.48″ @ 0000 up to a high of 30.59″ @ 2140.

Saturday had 0.16″ of melted precipitation, with 1.8″ of snow. 0.32″ is my January monthly total so far and also my year-to-date total for 2019. My year-to-date snowfall is 1.8″ with the seasonal total now at 3.9″.

Sunday was cloudy and colder, with temps remaining in the 20s, with steady light snow falling all day, heavier in the late afternoon and evening as energy from an upper-level LOW created more action off the coast on a NE flow with more available moisture. It was a drier snow, with a SWE of about 15:1. The 9.7″ of snow that fell along with the 1.8″ on Saturday yielded a storm total of 11.5″, the greatest snowstorm amount since the big snow in January 2016.

Sunday

The maximum temperature was 29.9° at 1349.

The minimum temperature was 26.9° at 0715.

Dew point temperatures ranged from a low of 25° @ 0549 up to a high of 28° @ 1514.

Relative humidity values ranged from a low of 89% @ 1403 up to a high of 94% @ 1708.

Barometric pressure ranged from a high of 30.47″ @ 0000 down to a low of 30.26″ @ 1440.

Sunday had 0.65″ of melted precipitation, with 9.7″ of snow. 0.97″ is now my January monthly total and also my year-to-date total for 2019. My year-to-date snowfall is now 11.5″ with the seasonal total 13.6″.

My current online data (except for rainfall/snowfall – use the cocorahs link shown below for that dataset) is showing regularly on Weather Underground. My data is posted there every 5 minutes. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in
real-time now as it is being updated on a 5 minute interval. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDROCKV200

I contribute my precipitation data daily to CoCoRaHS as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/

Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge, just as it does on WxLink 2.0. The tipping bucket has been producing erratic values at times so should not be used save for general precipitation timing. For example during this snowstorm the snow didn’t melt at all during the storm, and only started to record precipitation amounts a few days later when the sun and above freezing temperatures started to melt the snow.

I actually use the data I post to CoCoRaHS from my 4 inch CoCoRaHS gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day. I also use a snow stake outside my balcony window to get an idea on how much snow has fallen (while it is snowing) and how much snow is on the ground. A picture of this stake is shown below.

Good very early morning from the Walrus on this cloudy, occasionally snowy Friday morning. My next post will cover Monday-Friday of this week. Snowstorm pictures are the featured image today (late Sunday afternoon with snow actually falling), along with a few more below of my courtyard, including the 11″ snow stake picture (enlarge it to see it better if necessary).
