A cloudy, very mild, wet update from West Rockville for Friday, December 21, 2018
Friday was cloudy early and from mid-afternoon on with light rain in the early AM and heavier showers in the mid-afternoon (1530-1700) when most of the day’s rain (0.98″) fell. Temperatures were quite mild, reaching the mid 60s by early afternoon, when we had a brief mid-day interlude of partly cloudy skies full of many spectacular cumulus buildups, along with the balmy temperatures. Temps held in the low 60s overnight, rose to the mid 60s by early afternoon, then started to fall in the late afternoon and especially the evening. We stayed in the area flood watch most of the day, expiring finally in the evening.
The maximum temperature was 64.8° at 1325.
The minimum temperature was 43.3° at 2359.
Dew point temperatures ranged from a high of 61° @ 0340 down to a low of 40° @ 2256.
Relative humidity values ranged from a high of 97% @ 0000 down to a low of 77% @ 1425.
Barometric pressure ranged from a high of 29.48″ @ 0000 down to a low of 29.17″ @ 1555. This value is the lowest for the year, surpassing the previous min of 29.37″ back on January 26.
0.98″ of rain fell on Friday. December 2018 now has a total of 5.59″ of precipitation (liquid water equivalent). The year-to-date precipitation is now 64.40″. Unfortunately snow is not in future forecasts for the foreseeable future through Christmas, so a White Christmas looks rather unlikely for our immediate area.
My current online data (except for rainfall/snowfall – use cocorahs link shown below for that dataset) is showing regularly on Weather Underground. My data is posted there every 5 minutes. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time now as it is being updated on a 5 minute interval. The web address for my data on weather underground is:
https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDROCKV200
I contribute my precipitation data daily to CoCoRaHS as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/
Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge, just as it does on WxLink 2.0. The tipping bucket is producing erratic values so should not be used save for general precipitation timing. For example last Saturday it recorded 5.62″ for the day, clearly a significantly higher amount when compared to my 4 inch gauge total that day (3.24″). I actually use the data I post to CoCoRaHS from my 4 inch CoCoRaHS gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day.
There is an Area Flood Watch out for most of the region through Saturday evening.
Saturday will dry out and cool off some with partly cloudy skies, highs in the upper 40s, lows in the upper 20s.
Sunday will be partly sunny with highs in the upper-mid 40s and lows in the mid 30s.
Christmas Eve Monday should be partly to mostly cloudy and a bit cooler with highs in the low 40s and lows in th the upper-mid 20s.
Christmas Day Tuesday looks to be partly to mostly cloudy with highs in the low 40s and lows around 30°. Little chances for snow here, unfortunately.
Friday’s midnight observations included a temperature of 43.3°, relative humidity 87%, barometric pressure 29.32″ and rising, with a dew point of 39.7° under partially clearing skies.
Currently at 0737 the temperature is 44.3°, dew point temperature 37°, relative humidity 74%, and the barometric pressure at 29.61″ and rising under mostly cloudy, slowly drying out skies. During the overnight, temperatures held in the low to mid 40s under variably cloudy skies with a few light showers.
Good morning from the Walrus on this mostly cloudy Saturday.
