Mostly cloudy, warm, humid but essentially dry update for West Rockville Maryland for Saturday August 11, 2018

Saturday started out cloudy with sprinkles scattered about (T) with the promise of more serious storms later in the afternoon, but they failed to materialize at my location. Showers fell elsewhere in the region as usual. Conditions remained mostly cloudy, warm, and humid, with high temps in the upper mid 80s and lows in the upper low 70s. Overnight into Sunday mostly to partly cloudy skies held forth, remaining in the low 70s and staying humid but dry. The Saturday maximum temperature was 87.6° @ 1418, while the Saturday minimum temperature was 73.5° @ 0657. The dew point temperatures rose a bit, mostly in the lower 70s, ranging from a high of 75° @ 1548 down to a low of 69° @ 1904. The barometric pressure remained somewhat low but a bit higher than yesterday’s values – the lowest value being 29.88″ @ 1603 up to a high of 29.97″ @ 2318. The relative humidity was a bit higher than yesterday, ranging from a high of 91% @ 0640 down to a low of 60% at 1420.

Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444 I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDrockv200#history/ I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/ Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge. I actually use the data I post to cocorahs from my 4″ cocorahs gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day.

I talked with Ray a few times about his new wind measuring setup, the chances for rain this weekend, and some football. I interacted on email with a few observers over our July data exchanges, and to Marty on text to interact about yesterday’s featured image of Ray’s new wind direction indicator.

Saturday was essentially dry (just a few trace sprinkles in the morning) though cloudy, warm and humid. Sunday and Monday still look to be more cloudy than sunny with highs in the lower mid 80s, lows in the upper-mid 60s on Sunday with a 50 POP for PM thunderstorms and highs of about 80° and lows in the mid 60s on Monday with an 80 POP for thunderstorms. Tuesday looks partly sunny with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the mid 60s and a 40 POP for PM thunderstorms. Wednesday and Thursday should heat up a bit into the upper 80s to around 90° under partly cloudy skies, with lows around 70° and only a 10 POP for rain.

At 1040, Channel 4 radar is showing showers and thunderstorms out in the mountains of central WV and western MD moving east but doubtful to advance into our area later as they will probably weaken/dry up as they move over more of the mountains further east. There are some showers along the Carolina coast, not moving this way, and mostly offshore.

At 1040, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WX Bug station are as follows:

Mostly cloudy skies, mild and still humid but dry at the moment.

Station Relative Location Temp RH  DP   BP    Wind High/Low Sat. temp
VP2        Ground             73.3° 89% 70° 30.06″R NA 87.6°/73.5°

The total precipitation in the cocorahs gauge was a trace through midnight Saturday. The VP2 tipping bucket had 0.00″, since it does not record trace amounts.

Saturday’s precipitation was a trace (T)
August precipitation total is still 2.20″
Year-to-date precipitation total 32.61″

WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 73° 94% 71° 30.09″R Calm G ENE 6
                              140° from station          (est) Sat. Hi/Lo 89°/72°

The Lakewood rain gauge recorded 0.00″ of rain on Saturday (It also doesn’t record traces). The August total precipitation is now 2.04″ with the 2018 year-to-date (YTD) amount at 47.20″. I definitely continue to believe that at times the disparities between the Lakewood WX Bug station precipitation amount total for the month and year and my cocorahs gauge based data is that the Lakewood precip values are estimated/adjusted from radar.

At 2400 obs Saturday night the temperature from the VP2 was 76.6° RH 82% BP 29.91″R DP 70.7°
Partly Cloudy, warm and dry.

Good morning from the cloudy, mild, muggy but still dry home of the Walrus on this Sunday.
