Partly sunny, hot, humid with brief thunderstorm update for West Rockville Maryland for Tuesday August 7, 2018
Tuesday featured a partly sunny, hot, humid day, but not totally dry as we had a brief thunderstorm between 1530 and 1400 (0.07″ – max rain rate 0.54″ @ 1540) Other “cloud systems” passed through later, but just a shell of what they had been to my northwest out in the mountains, and were essentially dry. We barely reached 90° for our high (only due to rounding to the nearest degree) after muggy mid 70s in the early morning. Overnight into Wednesday mostly clear skies (some high clouds), humid, but with no more rain. Temperatures remained in the low 70s overnight, with dew points about the same. The Tuesday maximum temperature was 89.7° @ 1443, while the Tuesday minimum temperature was 73.9° @ 0532. The dew point temperatures remained in the 70s all day, ranging from a high of 77° @ 1335 down to a low of 70° @ 1413 (note – this was an unusual dip in the dew point over less than an hour time without any significant weather occurring as far as rainfall goes – must have been something else significant that caused this – air temperature remained around 88° during both extremes) . The barometric pressure lowered from yesterday’s values – the highest value being 30.04″ @ 0044 down to a low of 29.93″ @ 1712. The relative humidity essentially the same as yesterday, ranging from a high of 95% @ 0705 down to a low of 54% at 1414.
Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444 I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDrockv200#history/ I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/ Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge. I actually use the data I post to cocorahs from my 4″ cocorahs gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day.
I spoke a few times with Ray about some exciting news he wanted to tell me about a fellow observer and close friend, and also about not wanting that shelter our mutual friend is trying to sell – too big is the main reason according to Ray.
Tuesday featured partly sunny, hot, humid conditions most of the day, with clouds building fairly early ahead of my brief thundershower between 1530-1600. More clouds at times through the mid-evening hours, but it cleared by late evening, much as it did yesterday. Wednesday should be partly cloudy with highs around 90°, lows in the lower 70s and a 60 POP for PM thunderstorms. Thursday and Friday look to be partly cloudy and slightly less humid with highs in the mid-upper 80s and lows in the mid-upper 60s. Both weekend days look to be more cloudy than sunny, high only in the low 80s, lows in the upper 60s with a 60 POP for scattered thunderstorms.
At 1203, Channel 4 radar is showing showers building slowly out well to my west over parts of KY and OH. Further to the SW more showers/storms can be found scattered about. More widespread storms are in much of western NY at this time, but not moving this way, as they should stay to my north.
At 1203, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WX Bug station are as follows:
Mostly sunny skies, some high clouds, warm and humid but dry.
Station Relative Location Temp RH DP BP Wind High/Low temp on Tuesday
VP2 Ground 85.0° 75% 76° 29.96″S NA 89.7°/73.9°
The total precipitation in the cocorahs gauge was 0.07″ through midnight Tuesday. The VP2 tipping bucket had 0.08″, slightly more most likely due to another accidental tip.
Tuesday’s precipitation was 0.07″
August precipitation total is now 2.20″
Year-to-date precipitation total 32.61″
WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 84° 68% 72° 30.00″S SW 4 G WSW 12
140° from station Mon. Hi/Lo 90°/72°
The Lakewood rain gauge recorded 0.06″ of rain on Tuesday. The August total precipitation remained at 1.97″ with the 2018 year-to-date (YTD) amount remaining at 47.14″. I definitely continue to believe that at times the disparities between the Lakewood WX Bug station precipitation amount total for the month and year and my cocorahs gauge based data is that the Lakewood precip values are estimated/adjusted from radar.
At 2400 obs Sunday night the temperature from the VP2 was 74.4° RH 94% BP 29.96″S DP 72.6°
Clear, muggy, and warm but dry.
Good early afternoon from the mostly sunny (some high clouds), warm and humid home of the Walrus on this so far dry Wednesday.
