Cloudy, warm, humid, with occasional light thundershowers update for West Rockville Maryland for Thursday August 2, 2018

Thursday was once again humid, but not too warm with all the cloudiness around and light showers right after midnight and then in the mid-afternoon (0.05″) . Overnight into Thursday the heavy showers/storms from late Wednesday night carried over into the first few minutes of the day, then shut down. Temperatures remained in the low 70s, with dew points about the same. The Thursday maximum temperature was 81.0° @ 1320, while the Thursday minimum temperature was 71.0° @ 0618. The dew point temperatures remained in the 70s all day, ranging from a low of 70° @ 0544 up to a high of 76° @ 1333. The barometric pressure rose some from yesterday’s values – the lowest value being 30.05″ @ 0147 up to a high of 30.13″ @ 1133. The relative humidity remained high, ranging from a high of 97% @ 0633 down to a low of 82% at 1318, just before the afternoon showers started.

Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444 I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDrockv200#history/ I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/ Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge. I actually use the data I post to cocorahs from my 4″ cocorahs gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day.

I worked on my data most of the day, after my last physical therapy session in the early afternoon. I managed to have a traditional cereal breakfast and then started working on my July data. I talked with my older daughter Tracy on her way to work, and messaged her and several others in the late afternoon and evening. For supper I had the rest of my leftover burrito from my birthday dinner last Sunday at La Mexicana where Tracy works. I did manage to talk with Robin and see Gideon via Face-Time in the later evening, always a delight.

Thursday was cloudy with light showers right after midnight with thunder waning, and also more light thunder and light rain in the mid-afternoon. Friday should be cloudy with highs in the low 80s and lows around 70° with an 80 POP for thunderstorms. The weekend looks warmer and drier, as both Saturday and Sunday will have sunny to partly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 80s to around 90° and lows around 70°. Monday should be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 80s and lows around 70°. Minimal chances for rain Saturday and Monday (20 POP) and Sunday (10 POP). Tuesday will feature more of the same conditions as Monday.

At 0500, Channel 4 radar is showing showers and a few embedded thunderstorms out to my west and SSW moving NE. Much the same as yesterday out in the mountains of western MD, southern VA, central and western PA and in much of WV. A flash flood watch remains in place throughout most of the region for the foreseeable future, quite possibly well into the weekend.

At 0500, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WX Bug station are as follows:

Mostly cloudy skies, mild without any rain at the moment but as usual high dew point values.

Station Relative Location Temp  RH    DP     BP     Wind High/Low temp on Thursday
VP2             Ground        71.6°  95% 70° 30.13″S  NA    81.0°/71.0°

The total precipitation in the cocorahs gauge was 0.05″ through midnight Thursday. The VP2 tipping bucket recorded 0.04″.

Thursday’s precipitation was 0.05″
July’s final precipitation total was 8.14″
August precipitation total is 1.39″
Year-to-date precipitation total is now 31.80″

WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 72° 100% 72° 30.16″S SSE 1 G SSE 6
                            140° from station                    Wed Hi/Lo 80°/70° (est)

The Lakewood rain gauge recorded 0.00″ of rain on Thursday. The precip records have switched over to August, showing a total for August of 0.77″ with the 2018 year-to-date (YTD) amount at 45.94″. I definitely continue to believe that at times the disparities between the Lakewood WX Bug station precipitation amount total for the month and year and my cocorahs gauge based data is that the Lakewood precip values are estimated/adjusted from radar.

At 2400 obs Thursday night the temperature from the VP2 was 73.9° RH 95% BP 30.12″ R DP 72.4°
Cloudy, muggy, and mild but not raining.

Good morning from the cloudy, mild and humid home of the Walrus early on this Friday.

I have decided for now not to continue posting my cocorahs report here as I did yesterday.

VP2 weather station down from 2230 Monday till about 1500 on Tuesday due to ISS battery failure,
replaced Tuesday afternoon and now up and running again fine since then. Some estimations of
temperature and misc other values, particularly on Tuesday, were made based on very reliable nearby
observer data to help complete the record. Official cocorahs rainfall records unaffected.
