A mostly cloudy, cooler, damp update for West Rockville Maryland for Sunday June 10, 2018
Sunday was a cooler, cloudy, damp but not wet day with temperatures starting out in the upper 60s in the early AM but only rising into the mid 70s by mid-afternoon before they started to drop again after a cold frontal passage passed through from the north. Clouds dominated the skies all day, and radar seemed to indicate a few times that we were going to get significant rain. But as usual the rain clouds parted the ways just before reaching my location and either broke apart or were diverted elsewhere. Other areas in the Metro DC/Baltimore region, particularly over towards Baltimore, in suburban southern Virginia and southern Maryland. Overnight into Monday cloudy skies held and the rains finally came. Details to follow in Monday’s report. Temperatures continued to fall into the upper 50s by sunrise. The Sunday maximum temperature was 76.9° @ 1448, while the Sunday minimum temperature dropped to 63..4° @ 2355. The dew point temperatures rose again early, cracking over the 70° mark by the late afternoon, ranging from a high of 71° @ 1720 down to a low of 61° late @ 2355. The barometric pressure lowered more from Saturday – the highest value being 30.04″ @ 0000 down to a low of 29.89″ @ 1805. The relative humidity values rose significantly on the low end, ranging from a high of 96% at 0700 down to a low of 81% at 1410.
Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444 I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDrockv200#history/ I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/ Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge. I actually use the data I post to cocorahs from my 4″ cocorahs gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day.
Sunday indeed cooled off a bit under cloudy skies with highs in the upper-mid 70s with lows in the low-mid 60s right at the end of the day. Rain managed to escape my location all day, even though it was all around according to numerous reports and several radars I checked out. Monday started off cooler and wet through most of the morning, then had a slowly lifting overcast all day with temps only reaching the mid 60s after overnight lows in the upper-mid 50s. Tuesday should be mostly sunny and warmer for the big Stanley Cup Celebration parade for the Caps in downtown Washington D.C., with highs in the upper 70s and lows in the mid 60s. Wednesday should be mostly cloudy and still warmer, highs in the upper-mid 80s and lows in the upper-mid 60s with only a 20 POP for rain, then partly cloudy on Thursday with highs in the mid 80s and lows around 60°. Friday should be mostly sunny with highs in the low 80s and lows in the upper 50s.
At 1948, Channel 4 radar is showing our early Monday morning rain has moved south to SE VA and the border area of VA and NC with more further south down into southern NC into SC and offshore.
As of 1948, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WX Bug station are as follows:
A slowly lifting stratocumulus overcast, looking less ominous by the hour.(see today’s feature image taken about 1415 EDT before any lifting occurred)
Station Relative Location Temp RH DP BP Wind High/Low temp on Sunday
VP2 Ground 63.4° 85% 59° 30.12″R NA 76.9°/63.4°
The total precipitation in the cocorahs gauge was 0.00″ through midnight Sunday. The VP2 tipping bucket recorded 0.00″. Since midnight 0.77″ of rain was recorded in the tipping bucket. Stay tuned for my Monday report for further details.
Sunday’s precipitation was 0.00″
June precipitation 1.77″
Year-to-date precipitation total 20.19″
WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 62° 83% 57° 30.11″R ESE 4 G ESE 10
140° from station (est 77°/63°)
The Lakewood rain gauge recorded 0.00″ of precipitation on Sunday. However so far on Monday it recorded 0.55″ of rain. June total precip is now at 4.82″ with the 2018 year-to-date (YTD) amount at 30.85″. I think they still have more catching up to do. I definitely continue to believe that at times the great disparity between the Lakewood WX Bug station precipitation amount total for the month and year and my cocorahs gauge based data is that the Lakewood precip values are estimated/adjusted from radar.
At 2400 obs Sunday night the temperature from the VP2 was 63.4° RH 92% BP 29.93″F DP 61.0°
Mostly cloudy, muggy and cooler at 2400 Sunday
Good early evening from the cloudy, very slowly drying out home of the walrus on this Monday.
