A mostly cloudy, warm, muggy with a brief evening shower update for West Rockville Maryland for Saturday June 9, 2018
Saturday was a warmer, more humid, mostly cloudy/hazy day with temperatures starting out in the upper 60s in the early AM and rising into the mid 80s by mid-afternoon. Clouds dominated the skies, though the sun and a bit of blue sky did poke through at times. Darker, more threatening clouds moved in during the latter part of the day, and we did have a brief shower between 1910 and 1930 (0.05″ – max rain rate 1.30″/hour @ 1915). Other areas had much heavier and more severe weather, particularly out to my west and south over parts of Virginia and southern Maryland with more severe weather warnings, including flooding in select locations. Overnight into Sunday cloudy skies held with temperatures only falling into the upper-mid 60s by sunrise. The Saturday maximum temperature was 85.6° @ 1547, while the Saturday minimum temperature only dropped to 69.0° @ 0332. The dew point temperatures continued to rise, cracking over the 70° mark by midday, ranging from a high of 74° @ 1450 down to a low of 66° @ 1813. The barometric pressure lowered from Friday – the highest value being 30.13″ @ 0005 down to a low of 30.00″ @ 1639. The relative humidity values were roughly the same as yesterday’s values, ranging from a high of 95% at 0548 down to a low of 56% at 1813.
Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444 I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. The web address for my data on weather underground is: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KMDrockv200#history/ I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115 on https://www.cocorahs.org/ Please remember that Weather Underground precipitation data reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge. I actually use the data I post to cocorahs from my 4″ cocorahs gauge I read manually as my “official” precipitation total each day.
Saturday was warmer and muggier under mostly cloudy skies with a brief shower between 1710 and 1730 as described further earlier with highs in the mid 80s, lows in the upper 60s. Sunday cools off a bit with cloudy skies, highs in the upper 70s, lows around 60°, and a 60 POP for scattered thunderstorms. Monday looks to be cooler and cloudy, highs in the mid 60s with lows in the mid 50s, with a 60 POP for AM showers. Tuesday should be partly cloudy and milder, with highs in the mid 70s and lows in the mid 60s. Wednesday should be cloudy and warmer, highs in the low 80s and lows in the mid 60s with only a 20 POP for rain, then partly cloudy on Thursday with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the low 60s.
At 1543, Channel 4 radar is showing numerous showers and storms out to my west/northwest and north, heading E/SE with a can’t miss scenario for my station to get some decent rain. But I have seen it before and changes have been known to occur of late just ahead of touchdown that either greatly reduces the intensity or wipes it out completely. So we shall see. returns currently in the 4 state Mid-Atlantic region. Closest rain are numerous showers heading east/southeast out of OH and MI at the current time.
As of 1543, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WX Bug station are as follows:
Lowering stratocumulus overcast, looking more ominous by the minute. (see today’s featured image taken around 1415 EDT this Sunday afternoon)
Station Relative Location Temp RH DP BP Wind High/Low temp on Saturday
VP2 Ground 76.2° 81% 70° 29.93″F NA 85.6°/69.0°
The total precipitation in the cocorahs gauge was 0.05″ through midnight Saturday. The VP2 tipping bucket recorded 0.08″ with a max rain rate of 1.30″/hour at 1915.
Saturday’s precipitation was 0.05″
June precipitation 1.77″
Year-to-date precipitation total 20.19″
WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 76° 76% 68° 29.96″F ESE 4 G ESE 11
140° from station
The Lakewood rain gauge recorded 0.00″ of precipitation on Saturday. June total precip remained at 4.58″ with the 2018 year-to-date (YTD) amount also holding at 30.61″. I think they have some catching up to do. I definitely continue to believe that at times the great disparity between the Lakewood WX Bug station precipitation amount total for the month and year and my cocorahs gauge based data is that the Lakewood precip values are estimated/adjusted from radar.
At 2400 obs Saturday night the temperature from the VP2 was 70.4° RH 93% BP 30.09″F DP 68.3°
Mostly cloudy, muggy and a bit cooler at 2400 Saturday
Good afternoon from the cloudy, increasingly damp home of the walrus on this Sunday.
