A cloudy, colder update for West Rockville Maryland on Monday, January 29 2018
Monday continued our “roller-coaster” colder part of the wave with clouds ahead of a minor snow event early on Tuesday. Temps fell most of the day from the mid 40s very early down to the upper 30s late. The Monday maximum temperature from the VP2 (45.9°) was recorded very early at 0000 while the minimum temperature (37.8°) was recorded just about 24 hours later at 2357. My dew point temperatures dropped today, ranging from a high of 42° at 0000 down to 28° at 2131. Relative humidity values lowered today (85% – 56%). Barometric values fell more today, ranging from a high of 30.23″ early at 0016 down to a low of 30.02″ late at 2357.
Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444.
I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115. Please remember that Weather Underground does not report snow data, and reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge.
I spoke with Ray several times about the impending minor snow that looks quite unimpressive, and our general dryness, which Ray sees as storms miss us and we only get light frontal type of precipitation and light snows from Clippers occasionally. I also chatted with Marty for a while, plus exchanged a few emails.
My snowstake needs adjusting – in the harsh winter environment it is leaning over significantly. Taken about 1315 today – early AM snow melted/evaporated by this time. Current temp was 30.2 Dew pt 15. Winds NW @ 15-20 MPH Lean can be compared with white flagpole adjacent, as it is pretty much vertical. See image below:
We have stayed cold all morning, with temps remaining around the 30° mark for the past several hours since the snow quit around 0600. The snow started around 0430 with temps above freezing (around 33-34°) so the roads and sidewalks just got wet, but there was a small accumulation on the grass, which has already evaporated or blown about in the moderate to strong winds. We have had slowly decreasing clouds all morning, with sun coming through now under a partial high cloud overcast. There still is a slight possibility this afternoon of a light flurry or snow shower, but doubtful. The partly cloudy, blustery, cold conditions should continue through Tuesday afternoon with highs only up to the low 30s and lows in the upper teens. Wednesday should be partly cloudy as we wrap up the month of January with highs in the low 40s and lows around 30°. February will start out on Thursday on a milder note under partly to mostly cloudy skies and a 50 POP for PM showers, with highs around 50° and lows in the upper 20s. A return to cold and partly cloudy skies on Ground Hog Day Friday, with highs around the freezing mark and lows in the mid-upper teens with blustery conditions at times. Saturday should be mostly sunny with highs in the upper 30s and lows in the low 30s.
On the Channel 4 weather website at 1347 radar is showing our early morning snow has moved on to the North and East over the MD Eastern Shore, NE MD and Delaware and points north and east over parts of NJ, NY and New England. There also are scattered lake-effect snow showers over parts of PA, WV and western MD at this time that will most likely dry up going over the mountains before they can reach my location.
As of 1347, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WXBug station are as follows:
Partly Cloudy and colder at the present time.

There was no precipitation in the cocorahs gauge on Monday through midnight obs. The VP2 tipping bucket rain gauge under my balcony recorded 0.01″ on Monday through midnight. I think that might have been caused due to vibration by big trucks on the roadway close by.
January precipitation is now 1.82″.

Good afternoon from the partly cloudy, colder but still essentially a snowless Walrus on this early Tuesday afternoon. What is left of our morning snow is shown as the featured image – taken at 1315 early this afternoon.
