A partly cloudy, colder update for West Rockville Maryland on Tuesday, December 26 2017
Tuesday was partly cloudy, still blustery at times, and a bit colder than Christmas Day statistically but wind chill temps actually eased up a bit. No snow though, but there is a slight chance for snow Wednesday morning (we are in the winter weather advisory area for 1 inch of snow or less – and it definitely looks like less at this point. The Tuesday minimum temperature from the VP2 (26.2°) was recorded at 0651 while the maximum temperature (34.3°) was recorded at 1504. Dew point temperatures ranged from 16° at 2113 down to 9° at 0034. Relative humidity values lowered from yesterday’s values (57% – 41%). Barometric values remained high, and higher than yesterday, ranging from an early morning min of 30.37″ at 00000 up to 30.52″ a bit later at 0954. Yesterday I posted a picture of a downed flag pole out my balcony next to my new “snow stake”. I reported it to management, and they took care of the flag and flagpole, leaving my snow stake in place thankfully. Updated image is shown below (wish it had snow in it) and today’s featured image is of the northern horizon where snow is probably falling this morning.
Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444.
I am also now on weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115. Please take note that Weather Underground does not report snow data, and reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge.
I had a late brunch of cereal and hazelnut coffee. I then caught the evening sports, news and weather, where I learned that we had been put under a winter weather advisory a bit earlier in the day. More updates on that later. My major project for the evening was to finish up my November summary for the NJWO Weathershelter and the NJWO blog and send it out for final publication. I will eventually get it posted out to most of you quite soon, possibly here on my blog in a few minutes.
We are under a winter weather advisory for one inch of snow (most likely less if any at all actually) till 11 AM Wednesday, but will probably be cancelled before that. See radar updates below for later information. Wednesday will dawn cloudy and cold, with temperatures in the 20s, not rising much during the rest of the day (upper 20s). Clouds should give way to PM sun later. Lows tonight in the low teens under partly cloudy skies. Thursday should get even colder, with highs in the mid 20s and lows in the mid teens under sunny skies. Friday should moderate to high temps just over the freezing mark (mid 30s) under partly cloudy skies, with lows in the low 20s. Saturday should be cloudy with highs in the low 30s and a 40 POP for AM snow showers., lows in the low teens. Sunday should plunge us back into the deep freeze, with high temps in the mid 20s and lows down around 10° under mostly sunny skies. The cold looks to persist well into the new year, with near-miss snow chances that have to continue to be monitored in the changeable cold pattern we are in.
On the Channel 4 weather website at 0747 radar is showing a thin line of snow showers running just a bit north of a due east-west line from northern VA and the WV panhandle across northern Maryland about 10-15 miles north of me, then heading in through Baltimore and NE Maryland. Right now to me it doesn’t look very promising for any snow here, but some better chances for snow up in the Frederick, Carroll, and Baltimore County areas over the next few hours.
As of 0747, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WXBug station are as follows :
Station Relative Location Temp RH DP BP Wind High/Low temp today
VP2 Ground 27.3 64 17 30.53R NA 34.3/26.2
There was no precipitation in the cocorahs gauge on Tuesday. The VP2 tipping bucket rain gauge under my balcony recorded no precipitation on Tuesday through midnight.
December precipitation is 0.80″ through midnight obs Monday.
December snowfall is 3.3″. The seasonal snowfall total is 3.3″.
Year-to-date precipitation total is 39.31″
WX Bug Lakewood 4500 ft, 26 67 17 30.47R NE 2 G NE 8

The Lakewood rain gauge reported no precipitation through midnight on Tuesday. However, they are still reporting 1.13″ of precipitation falling up to this point in December, and a grand total of 40.47″ of rain for the year-to-date value. I will be going in depth into their records to check these figures out, and see if I can figure out these inconsistencies for the month and the year.
Temp from the VP2 at 2400 was 30.0 RH 54% BP 30.49F DP 15.4. Cloudy, cold and dry
Good morning from the mostly cloudy, cold, less windy but still snowless Walrus early on this Wednesday morning.
