A sunny, milder, melting update for West Rockville Maryland on Tuesday, January 9 2018

Tuesday warmed up under full sun up into the mid 40s, melting all the ice and snow left from previous storms. The Tuesday minimum temperature from the VP2 (29.8°) was recorded at 0456 while the maximum temperature (46.1°) was recorded at 1634. The ground remained very cold into the morning hours, and yesterday’s light rain (corrected to a .06″ total) was hazardous afoot and for cars during the morning rush. My dew point temperatures ranged from 35° at 1007 down to 26° at 2100. Relative humidity values rose a bit more from yesterday’s values (96% – 54%). Barometric values rose continuously all day, from a midnight low of 30.12″ at 0001 up to 30.43″ nearly 24 hours later at 2352. The featured image today is of a very current picture of the Chesapeake Bay in the vicinity of the Bay Bridge near Annapolis, showing the ice cover on the Central Bay.

Remember now you can get the VP2 data on Weatherlink. You can access the data through http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman444.

I am posting daily to weather underground. My ID is KMDROCKV200 and my station is called “Gardens of Traville.” Data is online, normally just about in real-time. I contribute daily to cocorahs as Rockville 2.8 WNW, Station ID MD-MG-115. Right now Weather Underground is working intermittently at best for my station and several others locally so use the Weatherlink access if you want to see my data real-time. Please take note that Weather Underground does not report snow data, and reflects what is recorded automatically through the tipping bucket VP2 gauge.

I arose by mid-afternoon to take a shower and get some chores done, including a daytime visit to my rain gauge to determine that revised rainfall total from yesterday. I chatted with Marty in the evening about some data concerns, and talked about his visit (with Ray) to the Carroll County IFLOWS precipitation gauge at the County Landfill in the afternoon.

We have fair skies now early this Wednesday morning with temps in the low thirties. Temperatures have been fluctuating overnight more than usual. Wednesday should be partly cloudy with highs in the low 40s and lows in the low-mid 30s. Look for milder temperatures the rest of the week with mostly cloudy skies on Thursday with a 50 POP for PM showers and highs reaching the low 50s, lows in the mid 40s. Friday should feature cloudy skies and a 70 POP for rain showers with a high around 60° and lows dropping late into the low 30s. Clearing and colder over the weekend, partly cloudy with highs in the 30s on Saturday and sunny with highs in the 20s on Sunday and lows in the teens both nights.

On the Channel 4 weather website at 0800 radar is clear throughout the Eastern US. The closest precipitation is down in parts of Florida with some snow well north in parts of central Ontario at this time.

As of 0800, the data from the VP2 (coming from the ground radiation shield about 4 feet off the ground just under and out from the balcony) and the Lakewood WXBug station are as follows :

Fair with damp, moderating cold.

Station Relative Location Temp   RH  DP    BP      Wind High/Low temp Tuesday
VP2             Ground            32.0   75  25 30.50R   NA    46.1/29.8

There was actually 0.06″ of precipitation in the cocorahs gauge on Monday. I had to adjust the .03″ reported yesterday after the afternoon visit (safely with the ice melting off earlier) The VP2 tipping bucket rain gauge under my balcony recorded 0.02″ of precipitation on Tuesday through midnight. That was as a result of ice melting through during our warmer sunny skies on Tuesday afternoon. I no longer have any snow/ice on the ground.

The Lakewood rain gauge showed 0.01″ of precipitation on Tuesday. All the ice and snow have now melted through. It is now mysteriously reporting 0.43″ monthly and yearly January 2018 precipitation at the present time. I have no idea how it can total that much precipitation for the month/year.

Temp from the VP2 at 2400 was 36.4 RH 68% BP 30.43R DP 27.7. Clear and relatively mild and dry at 2400.

Good morning from the fair, relatively mild, and dry Walrus early on this Wednesday morning.
